It's the working mans Hamptons. If the teeming masses of New York's urbanites wont recoil you then go and have some fun. This might be the last year anyway with all the rumours of condo developers itching to upscale the place. There are some places to eat. Just don't wish for that overpriced crap you find in manhattan. "Rough around the edges" is code for what kind of people exactly? "Scary people" aren't kitschy in the slightest. Do you mean the drunks and druggies or the packs of teenagers that makes the young girls and uptight mothers squeeze their purses tighter? You won't get a refined and chi chi environment there nor will you find any of that pretentious attitude I find in the Hamptons. It's just a great place to see New York in all of her flavors. i do believe in karma, but here's the catch: we may not be able to see the way that our actions come back around. it's not instantaneous and clear-cut. so when somebody does something totally shitty, i know it will come back to them, but i might not ever know how. (and neither will they, if they're not paying attention.) [ Reply | More ]

I think of it more like, when someone is an a-hole to me, or a jerk in general, most likely they are an unhappy person - perhaps with a not-so-good or maybe even non-existent family life. That person most likely isn't going home every night really happy and satisfied with themselves. And I also try to remember that I am generally happy, have great friends, and a loving family. Now, of course that doesn't always work, and there's nothing like getting to witness karma in action, but it's worth a try to think about it. [ Reply | More ]

I toured 158, ended up going somewhere else (we're in that 151 reassignment zone, where you have to do a lottery for placement). Things I liked about PS 158: small class sizes, by mandate, a great library and a nice play yard. Kids looked happy and focused. Thing I didn't like: the gym had pillars right in the middle of the room. Hard to imagine how the kids could play games there without dealing with the pillars. But that's a minor concern. I think overall it's a great school [ Reply | More ]
