It is a part of school report, and the school grades given to each school which do carry funding. There is a pretty strong correlation between attendance and student achievement, so schools need to encourage/enforce attendance. [ Reply | More ]

how can a school enforce attendance? This is a function of the family the kid is coming from, i.e. this is way beyond a school's responsibility. The school can't do anything to increase attendance. That is messed up. [ Reply | More ]

I kind of remember that from way back when. Part of the funding formula. Makes sense. Otherwise, schools would pump up enrollment but discourage attendance. (In a purely us against the machine/Machiavellian view of school administrators -- which I do not have.) [ Reply | More ]

My mom used to beat this into me -- she worked in a school office. She would always that if you have something you have to take care of outside of school, that it's better to go to school and leave early than do the other activity and go late. Purely for school funding reasons, based on attendance. [ Reply | More ]

Certain tax levy money from Federal govt and NYS depends on attendance. So a school's actual funding will be adjusted based on attendance. [ Reply | More ]

it's factored into the report card grade -- the overall attendance rate. Clearly a school with an overall attendance rate of 97 percent is better than one with 93 percent -- kids and parents want to be there. They push for attendance, etc. [ Reply | More ]

Sure, GL! One other thing: It was a real drag was waiting for my motrin in the middle of the night (they have to bring it to you and watch you take it every six hours). 3 regular strength advil are the same as the prescription strength they give you. I would have been saved a lot of hassle if I'd known that and brought my own. Also, make sure to ask the nurses for several extra packs of everything you use in the hospital (witch hazel pads, squirt bottles, underwear, pads, etc) to bring home with you. Lifesavers for the first two-three weeks at home with a vaginal delivery. Also loved having the mattress protector pad which I took from the hospital--kept me from sweat- and milk-staining my nice sheets. [ Reply | More ]

Friends really burned a lot of people last go around. They overaccepted and had this B.S. thing called a"meaningful waitlist" which ended up not even moving. I heard interview horror stories. In one case, Coach dave had the balls to ask a family if they had a good public school! He had not even looked at their child's stellar ERB's. In other cases, harriet and Coach Dave interviewed people and couldn't even find the family's applications or anything! Appalling. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, but I think trashing of any school (public or private) by any parent (public or private) is tiresome and pointless. But then again, I guess that's the point of this board for some people. [ Reply | More ]

This happens to me IRL. Not on UB. I could care less what someone on UB says about my dc's school. [ Reply | More ]

It's amazing to me that a friend would make a negative comment about your dc's school. Not much of a friend, IMHO. [ Reply | More ]

Then I would consider letting the friendship go. I'm at that point in my life where I don't need or have time for unnecessary or negative relationships (God knows why I'm here...). [ Reply | More ]

is it a low tiered school, because IME the better the school the worst the comments to your face and the worse tier the school the nicer the comments to your face [ Reply | More ]

It goes both ways. I am a public school mom and have never said a negative word about any school but have had to suffer other people putting down my DCs school and public education in general. [ Reply | More ]

at my dd's first preschool, they gave her a tote bag with the school's name on it to carry stuff in. at the second one, she was told to bring a backpack (and in any event, she really wanted one) [ Reply | More ]

It depends on a lot of things like how close you have been, how long you have been friends etc. If you stop returning calls she should get the hint. [ Reply | More ]

I am on the other side of this right now and let me tell you it is painful. My suggestion is, if they ask what's going on to tell them and be a adult about it. Right now I am in the dark and it sucks. Otherwise, that is certainly the way to do it, stop contact. [ Reply | More ]

Ah - I want to "dump" a friend too, but she just started working in my department. It's so hard, and I just feel like a major bitch. But I've recently realized that both she and her husband are both mentally unstable and I don't want to be involved with them anymore. WHAT do I do?! I feel like I have to play 'nice-nice' because we do work in the same office and I need to be professional! [ Reply | More ]

that's what i figured. he demands the eggs. it was one of the few foods he could first say, so i think that was part of it. every morning: "egg, egg, egg, egg." and if i don't give him one, he looks at me "egg, egg, egg, egg." [ Reply | More ]
