Did I read this right? Part of the funding for public schools is based on the attendance of the children? What is the justification for that? How much influence does a school have to get the kids into school on time? Am I missing something? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

see below. Absences and tardiness count against a school. [ Reply | More ]

Some schools or districts ask you pay 40 bucks for each day your child is absent. I don't know anyone who personally does this, but the schools do ask you to compensate. [ Reply | More ]

No they don't. No way they could force you to pay. People owe tons of money for school lunches and they can't even manage to get that. [ Reply | More ]

OR was quite clear that she was talking about schools asking for this not demanding. -np [ Reply | More ]

Yes they request it, but can't force it. My neice's school in NJ asks for it and my dd's old school in LA asked for it too. [ Reply | More ]

Did anyone actually pay it? No way would I pay $200 just because dc is sick for a week. And we can afford it but it is ridiculous request. Luckily our school does not ask. [ Reply | More ]

It is a part of school report, and the school grades given to each school which do carry funding. There is a pretty strong correlation between attendance and student achievement, so schools need to encourage/enforce attendance. [ Reply | More ]

how can a school enforce attendance? This is a function of the family the kid is coming from, i.e. this is way beyond a school's responsibility. The school can't do anything to increase attendance. That is messed up. [ Reply | More ]

^^^Schools can and do what they can to improve attendance, there is a push to do that at every step. There are incentives, competitions between grades, parents are called in if there are issues, etc. etc. [ Reply | More ]

Okm I can see how a school can help to improve a child's attendance but I still disagree that a school should be punished for absences. [ Reply | More ]

I kind of remember that from way back when. Part of the funding formula. Makes sense. Otherwise, schools would pump up enrollment but discourage attendance. (In a purely us against the machine/Machiavellian view of school administrators -- which I do not have.) [ Reply | More ]

My mom used to beat this into me -- she worked in a school office. She would always that if you have something you have to take care of outside of school, that it's better to go to school and leave early than do the other activity and go late. Purely for school funding reasons, based on attendance. [ Reply | More ]

Certain tax levy money from Federal govt and NYS depends on attendance. So a school's actual funding will be adjusted based on attendance. [ Reply | More ]

it's factored into the report card grade -- the overall attendance rate. Clearly a school with an overall attendance rate of 97 percent is better than one with 93 percent -- kids and parents want to be there. They push for attendance, etc. [ Reply | More ]
