Anyone have any advice on what is really needed to bring to hospital for delivery aside from car seat, standard toiletries and going home clothes for mom & baby? Lists I've found include things like diapers, breast pump, and other things I would think the hospital supplies...I'm trying to avoid bringing a full size suitcase! Delivering at NY Presbyterian Cornell if it matters...TIA [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

leave the snacks at home. Once in labor you are not allowed to eat anything at all. [ Reply | More ]

I would take snacks. I gave birth about 7 pm. Afterward was ravenous--but the kitchen was closed. They had no snacks or anything for me. Dh went out and brought me back something to eat. [ Reply | More ]

YES, snacks--bring them!! I gave birth at 6:30pm, got "dinner" (and sandwich and some fruit) and an hour later when I was starving they gave us take out menus!! Yeah, that's exactly what I was wanting to do after having a child!! WTF! [ Reply | More ]

At NY Pres 9mo ago when I was there we were given most things (diapers, pads, great witch hazel pads, a radio! etc. I'd suggest flip flops for the shower and cool clothes for you it's hot in there. GL [ Reply | More ]

Ditto all of this--delivered there last month. DEFINITELY flip flops for shower and walking around. Also take your own nightgowns and sweatpants/tanks. Assuming you don't have a c-section, you'll feel more comfortable in your own clothes. Bring a few bottles of water as well, though DH can run out and get you more. I loved the hospital net underwear and thick nonstick maxipads, fwiw--those were really effective, breathable, and comfortable. Brought a ton home with me, in fact. [ Reply | More ]

Sure, GL! One other thing: It was a real drag was waiting for my motrin in the middle of the night (they have to bring it to you and watch you take it every six hours). 3 regular strength advil are the same as the prescription strength they give you. I would have been saved a lot of hassle if I'd known that and brought my own. Also, make sure to ask the nurses for several extra packs of everything you use in the hospital (witch hazel pads, squirt bottles, underwear, pads, etc) to bring home with you. Lifesavers for the first two-three weeks at home with a vaginal delivery. Also loved having the mattress protector pad which I took from the hospital--kept me from sweat- and milk-staining my nice sheets. [ Reply | More ]

I want to hear about that experience. With all my three births I didn't have to bring anything at all. Everything was provided by the hospital. DH brought me a new change of clothes etc. later on. [ Reply | More ]

Are you at presbyterian up in Washington heights or cornell over on the east side? They've merged. I gave birth at Columbia-Presbyterian when it was called that. Horrible experience. They didn't even have towels for the bathroom. Finally was able to track down one handtowel and a washcloth so I could take a shower--I had to beg for it, and I'm not kidding. [ Reply | More ]

bring maxi pads with wings, the ones you get don't have them, if you bring a pillow i would leave it there (i did) who knows what can get on your pillow (hospitals are dirty), cell phone, socks, chapstick, big clothes to wear home, you don't really need anything else but luck! [ Reply | More ]

Don't bring the car seat in the beginning--DH will have time to go home for it. You won't need a breast pump (if you have issues, the hospital ones are best anyway) and they'll give you diapers. [ Reply | More ]

what you really need is your insurance card and your checkbook. Everything else is rather unimportant the first couple of days (and DH can get that to you after you give birth). [ Reply | More ]

Bring what you need for labor and have a separate bag packed for your hospital stay and going home and have someone bring that later (and they can take home your labor bag). [ Reply | More ]

I was totally unprepared my water broke a month before and all I had was my cell phone and was fine,dh brought the carseat and clothes to go home in when I needed them.BTW the hospital pads that get cold are a lifesaver the first day or so [ Reply | More ]

You can make your own "cold" pads: Buy a pack of really thick Kotex pads, douse each one with witch hazel, and keep them the freezer. They really help in the first 2 days after a vaginal delivery. [ Reply | More ]

Witch Hazel hemerhoid (sp?) pads and that spray-on pain killer. SLR charged me a small fortune for these two items that I could have picked up at the drug store for under $10. [ Reply | More ]

Bring nipple cream if you are planning on breastfeeding. just had my third and I used Mother Love organic nipple cream and really liked it - I would actually use a few days before -- you can dry out your nipples a lot the first few days breastfeeding and hospital did not have anything.
