I'm about to start the application process for schools. Comparing a few and wondering if anyone has any thoughts: Friends vs. Grace Church School -- which has better academics, which has better arts (primarily interested in knowing about dance and drama). [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Go on tours of both and see for yourself. You get a very different feel at both schools. [ Reply | More ]

really, a dance and drama elective will determine where you kid attends? [ Reply | More ]

really, not quite...I am trying to look at the big picture of a bunch of schools and I think that how a school approaches the arts is important. just my opinion, and wondering what people who know both schools have to say about academics and arts at either school mentioned above... [ Reply | More ]

From my limited experience, Friends is strong academically but not as strong as Grace. Both schools stress arts but Grace's performing arts, at least in the older grades, is really outstanding. [ Reply | More ]

I was going to say the same thing. The upper school drama at grace is great. I saw a play at friends a long time ago and it was a mess. But that is not really a true assessment of the whole picture. [ Reply | More ]

If you are serious about dance or drama you will sign up your child for classes after school. [ Reply | More ]

I'm serious about the arts curriculum at the schools, not so much about after school stuff. [ Reply | More ]

If you or your dc is serious about dance or drama, you will need to suppplement outside of school. I would not recommend just relying on what's offered at any school as part of the curriculum, no matter how strong the offerings seem. [ Reply | More ]

My husband went to Grace Church and loved it. Just out of curiousity what do you do in 9th grade? Is it really hard to switch to other prep schools? [ Reply | More ]

shouldn't you already know what happens in 9th grade if your dh is an alum? [ Reply | More ]

My husband went there 30+ year ago and had a difficult time getting into a high school afterwards b/c he didn't test well. He ended up at Dwight which he hated. Since there are more children in the city now, I'm assuming it's even harder to get into a private high school in 9th grade, or not -- I don't really know, that's why I was asking.... Friends really burned a lot of people last go around. They overaccepted and had this B.S. thing called a"meaningful waitlist" which ended up not even moving. I heard interview horror stories. In one case, Coach dave had the balls to ask a family if they had a good public school! He had not even looked at their child's stellar ERB's. In other cases, harriet and Coach Dave interviewed people and couldn't even find the family's applications or anything! Appalling. [ Reply | More ]

We had a fabulous experience with Friends throughout the application process last year. Granted, we got in. But we thought they couldn't be nicer or more with the program. [ Reply | More ]

One thing UB was good for was to spread the word on how many families were on the so-called "meaningful waitlist." [ Reply | More ]

How do you figure? The Master List? Otherwise I couldn't tell if it was 2 people who got burned who posted over and over or 10. [ Reply | More ]

None of this really matters, since if you live downtown you should really apply to both and see what you think. They have really pretty different vibes. [ Reply | More ]

Grace is very traditional in many ways and also only goes through 8th grade. [ Reply | More ]
