depends on the person, some friends call back right away, others i have to call again and really pin down but the relationship is worth it to me to do so. some have big families, work and are really busy so i give a pass when i don't get a call back and if it's something really important that i need to talk to them about i call again. OP: Thanks for answering. Yes, spoke with the director and she said she spoke to the offenders (a group of older boys). They were calling her not so nice names and teasing her for being younger, blocking her way, etc. She is not the only one they pick on. It is carrying over to her and now she wants me to be with her all the time. [ Reply | More ]

I think a second call to the director is in order. If it is serious enough that you are considering pulling her out of camp then it is serious enough for the parents of these boys to be called about this. [ Reply | More ]

You are sending a bad message to your dd if you pull her out. You need to assure her that the boys got in trouble and wont tease her anymore. Then encourage her to have a good time at camp. [ Reply | More ]

Also, don't ask your dd if boys apologized. They are little boys and probably wont but you are testing your daughter's level of misery by questioning her like that. Just tell her to stay away from them and speak up if anything else happens. [ Reply | More ]

sounds like there is a supervision problem. i disagree with poster above that pulling dd is sending the wrong message, but i would also try with the director one more time. this is camp, not school -- camp is not obligatory, and while i believe kids need to figure out social situations and issues on their own, your child is still a preschooler -- not a kindergartner -- and is in need of some adult intervention here. IMHO I think that not pulling her out sends a bad signal! Plus, I think you can make a case that a refund is in order due to the fact that this camp has clearly become a "hostile" enviroment for dd. This is complete bullshit. My dd was taking an afterschool class and she kept saying that she didn't want to go - after a few minor investigations on my part it came to light that one of the kids was bullying the other kids, one kid wet his pants he was so terrified. I apologized profusly to dd and got her the hell out of there ASAP. [ Reply | More ]

OR: don't feel awful. You were operating as best you could based upon the information you have. I understand that argument about the "wrong signal" but your dd is only 3 yo and is not equipped to deal with older, bullying kids. FWIW, my ds has a SEIT who was at the camp with him -- at first she didn't want to take him out b/c of the "wrong signal" argument, but after a couple wks decided that it was best to take him out b/c of the negative environment. I really don't think that's the ultimate goal. I think the goal was to create a system of admissions that could withstand lawsuits. The variety of outright brokering that did in fact occur was truly absurd. The process is a sham. That's what I'm saying... We did well but too many were failed in this process. [ Reply | More ]

Klein is completely indifferent to the middle class. He does not care where the kids go to school or whether they go to school with each other only or with disadvantaged kids. He sees his job as helping the vast majority of underprivileged kids. The mc kids are irrelevant to that. The GT policy is a protection against lawsuits, and is the kind of centralization he likes since he thinks most people in the system who arent his people are idiots. (Although there is no evidence so far to indicate that his people are less idiotic than anyone else in teh system.) Other than lawsuits, it's hard to see what he hopes to accomplish with the big changes. Sibling policies in GTs mean more segregation by neighborhood. And siblign policies in citywides - especially since they only apply in district - seem really segregation-friendly. [ Reply | More ]

I agree with above but would add, it seemed like last year was transitional all along. The goal is universal (or near universal) testing of K kids for G&T. That will do a lot to make the population more like the city's population. [ Reply | More ]

I think it's going to be universal testing by request. It won't be automatic for K students in 2008-2009 as proposed initially. [ Reply | More ]

If the goal is to make more lower-income and diverse dcs eligible for G&T universal preK and ideally also high quality 3s preschool options are the only answer IMO. Without the enrichment, those kids are too far behind to score well enough already. [ Reply | More ]

the goal is to fill the seats with qualified children. Not to make g&t more lower income or diverse. That said, another goal was to get the word out about testing to groups that might not be in the loop (i.e. lower socio/economic groups. [ Reply | More ]

I will get flamed, but here goes. NYC public school starts in K (actually first, but another issue). I don't believe it is the job of the nyc public school system to have universal prek or preschool for 3's. It starts in K. [ Reply | More ]

Right now it is not, but I think school would benefit if it changed. As it is there is way too much of a gap between kids coming in and getting the group that is behind to catch up is costly and those kids learn to hate school from day '1'. It is sad to be considered a dummy for not knowing the alphabet when nobody ever taught you. [ Reply | More ]

imo, it IS their responsibility to provide the same quality of education to ALL learners from K on. Failing that- which they have, do and will continue to do, leaves our kids spending even more school hours preparing for yet another mandated test, another thief of a school experience designed by an inept, numbers driven (dis)Organization.. G&T was created to be a UMC relief program; now they're trying to figure out how to open it up more without it costing more. If they just opened up G&T Kindergartens in boroughs other than Manhattan, this wouldn't have been an issue. They let us all to believe they'd create G&T seats based on need, but they didn't. So, hundreds and hundreds of kids who scored above 90 (and even 97) had no place to go locally and there weren't enough citywide seats to meet demand. [ Reply | More ]

I was talking about the current incarnation of the G&T programs in Manhattan, especially districts 2 and 3. They were funded as magnet programs in the 1970s and 1980s to stem the tide of UMC moving out of NYC and taking their tax revenue with them. The public school system was on the verge of collapse. I'm not talking about the pedagogical process of tracking students through different programs (some had honors labels, or SP - which was a program of skipping a jr high school grade, etc.) [ Reply | More ]

it evolved out of mere curiosity. She just learned the letters early on and quickly. Then she wanted to know what signs said (she would recognize a lot so I didn't consider it reading). At almost 4yr old she wanted to learn how to read. We sat down and started putting 2 letter words together. Moved on to three letter words, ect. My younger dd is almost 4yr old and asking me to teach her. First let them learn the alphabet, then the sounds, then start putting 2 sounds toghether. Grows from there [ Reply | More ]

I cannot imagine that she would be expecting a raise while asking you to accomodate her schedule. Since the PT person is only watching 1 dc, I can't imagine you'd be paying her more than you pay your nanny to watch 2 dc. Plus, lots of nanny's want AM hours because their "child/children" is in school and their FT family has cut down their hours. [ Reply | More ]
