Public School moms - we live in a 4bdr in a bad district. If we buy a 1bdr and then sublet can we send dc to school in that zone? We own the property so technically yes right? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

You need to live there at the start of the school year. [ Reply | More ]

^^whether you own it or rent it does not matter but you need to live there. [ Reply | More ]

Not unless you actually live there. [ Reply | More ]

It's supposed to be where the child LIVES, not where you simply own property. That being said, you could get away with it. [ Reply | More ]

Totally understand. Don't want to have to have dc lie about where he lives and all, but we don't want to move and our zoned school is nto an option. Can't afford private. [ Reply | More ]

Can't afford private and can afford $500K+ for a 1BR in a good zone. Yeah right. [ Reply | More ]

Yes - if we sublet then it will eventually pay for itself and be a good investment. Can't afford private for 2 kids. [ Reply | More ]

The thing I see people get away with is renting something small in a good zone for 1 year and living in it PT. They dc can stay in the school even if you "move". [ Reply | More ]

That seems risky, but if it works maybe I could do this. [ Reply | More ]

I feel like if we own property long term we should be able to go to the school there. Rather than just rent for 1 year as a scam. We're invested in the zone. [ Reply | More ]

Be that as it may, the rules are clear -- your child's school is defined by his/er residence. It doesn't matter what you own. It matters where you go to bed. [ Reply | More ]

NP and Yes. If you sublet your place in bad zone - rent a place in good zone for a year. Sleep there. Your dc starts school. Then the next year you move back to your first apt. Your dc gets to stay in the school in good zone. HOWEVER, your second dc is no longer guarnateed a spot. Might get one in good school, might not. [ Reply | More ]

well, it's dishonest, we're going to have to suck it up and live in a small apartment so that our dc's can attend a good school so it's really not fair to do what you're considering and setting a bad example for the dc's. we'd all love to live in a 4 bedroom and get great schools but it's not possible for a lot of us. np. this is what we did. we live in a tiny apt. in a great zone. but at least we can sleep at night and know we're setting a decent example for dc. i would hate for him to have to lie to his friends at school. not worth it imo. [ Reply | More ]

well, tough sh&t. we'd all like to have a huge apartment in a crap zone and send our dcs to a great school, but some of us play by the rules. [ Reply | More ]

depends on the school, actually. some are more willing to turn a blind eye than others. the most popular schools in manhattan will not put up with this. [ Reply | More ]
