[ - ] Just returned from extended family vacation with my brother and his kids and my 2 yr old. While we were away, my ds kept trying to run in parking lots, out of restaurants, etc. My brother emailed me to say that he was really concerned about it and would be happy to share ideas for disciplining him if I'd like. He and his wife spank their kids, but I don't believe in it. We've tried time outs, talking to my ds, etc., but I think he's just too young to really appreciate the danger and is in the phase of trying to test/defy us. Do you think this is unusual behavior for a two-year-old? What else can I do to discipline/teach him not to do this? OP: My brother didn't send any other ideas to me yet. But during the course of the vacation, he and my sil spanked their older son (7 yo) with a belt. My sil also made several remarks about "having to beat them" -- she said it jokingly, but I felt like it was directed at me. Meanwhile, they let their 3 yo drink diet coke, feed their kids nothing but processed sugar and let them play with guns and swords -- all things that I don't approve of, but would never dream of bringing up with them. I don't spank but my 2 y.o. is required to hold my hand, be carried or be strapped into the stroller. If she bolts one time, she is automatically strapped into the stroller no matter how much she protests. Also, check yourself - do you follow through with your warnings? I am no expert. My 2 y.o. is our 3rd and I've learned that it's easier to be proactive in parenting than retroactive. So, it's worth it to me to fight the battle to get her into a highchair (at a restaurant) than deal with her falling off a chair and spilling her food everywhere. Just like I'd rather fight the battle of getting her into a stroller than chase her. But when my older kids are with me I can let her hold one of their hands so she feels more grown up and I feel she's safe. It's easier to compromise when you have more help. [ Reply | More

well I just pulled him aside and told him that I wasn't going to argue with him in front of her because that helps no one and only stresses her out. I also reminded him that she is the one in pain and if SHE choses to ask for meds then we should be respectful of her decision and since neither of us could relate (I didn't have kids back then) we shouldn't judge. Yeah, it's always a bit strange to hear my husband describe how the amnio wasn't too bad...He was great in labor and delivery and as pregnant (without being annoying at all) as he could be, along with me. Just tell him that first labors can be long and tiring on even the bystanders....offer to man the camera after the birth if they want...fetch ice chips while he stays with her, stay with her while he runs to get a bite to eat. My best friend was at my 1st delivery and I really liked having a friend with me who had given birth before and could offer suggestions my dh wouldn't have thought of. I had SIL in with us during labor. Originally it was because I wanted someone who I thought would be more comforting and nurturing during labor rahter than DH who is awesome, but can often be more like "You can do it." rather than "I know it hurts, let me rub your back". In the end though, the best thing was having 2 people there so that each had a break (labor was 30+ hrs) and 1 could attend to me and the other could go find a nurse, go fetch things, etc. And thye alternated those roles. It's impt to remember that you are alone through much of labor and often you don't want DH running off to attend to something and leaving you all alone. [ Reply | More

People complain about crowding in 199, but they have kept class size smaller than the avg NYC public. K classes this yr were about 22 kids, in NYC they can have as many as 28 kids in a K and the class size grows as they get older. People love and 87 and they rave about the principal. The school is larger. I think there were 7 K classes this yr with 25-26 kids. [ Reply | More

i'm with you on seeing green. that's my issue. i truly love and appreciate the park. never took it for granted. was always very happy there. BUT, i also value the low key vibe downtown, the restaurants and it seems i might be able to find some less crowded public schools. [ Reply | More

we probably use it differently than you did when you had a baby/toddler. We go to the Met, the Central Park Zoo, and a lot of playgrounds that may not be the closest ones to our apt (Hecksher playground at the south end of the park is great for older kids). We go skating in the winter at Wollman Rink, and my older child has little league and soccer games in the park. [ Reply | More

There is John Jay Park around 76th and East End, which is HUGE, it is a little too big for my taste. That area is zoned for PS 158, which has a mandate for small classes. I like that school. there is Carl Schurz Park in E80s on the river near Gracie mansion, but I strongly prefer the Westside Parks. This from a Westsider who is considering a move East for school. You get a little more apt for your $ on the Eastside, particularly if you are willing to live far East. There are more good schools including 6, 158, 290, 59 and some would include 183. The East Village proper is in District 1 which has lousy public schools, really bad. Only option is NEST which is a city wide testing program you are too late for (& if you do a search for NEST on UB you will see how strongly people fell for & against it) To be in District 2 you have to be West of 4th Ave and then you have great schools - PS 41, 40, 116, 11, 3 - all very good both gen ed & G&T. But if you are going to look at Styvesant Town or Peter Cooper be VERY careful since one apartment tower can be in one school zone and the one right next to it can be in another (not good) one. My DD is two, but it's DH that needs the park! I also wanted to say that the BPC area looks pretty green to me. PS89 and 234 are good but FULL. There was talk of turning people away. The East Village school situation is an issue if you are in D1, but Gramercy Park has what looks online to be a really nice great school - maybe it's called ps40 - and I would really look into that. I live on the UES, have lived UWS, W. Village, Soho and also prefer the restaurants and vibe downtown. I think I would find it landlocked now though. [ Reply | More
