[ - ] Our nanny of one year, who we like a lot, just told us she has to take a course in the fall (she's getting her Bachelor's Degree) which will make her unavailable for the first 3 hours of the morning. She said she found someone who could cover the time for her, understanding that we will have to interview her. DH is totally calm about it, but I'm feeling a little put out and anxious. DD #1 will be starting kindergarten in the fall and it seems like a lot of change at once. Also, I'm suspicious of a person who must not be working and knows she will be available for some random hours in the fall. I don't know what our alternative is but this is really bothering me. Please tell me I'm overreacting. 17 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I know, but if we don't like her, we are in a really difficult spot. How do you find someone to take a weird shift like that temporarily? And just the whole process of getting my kids used to a new person and of me being comfortable leaving my kids with a stranger. Ugh. I hate this sh*t so much. [ Reply | More ]

Okay, I'll keep my fingers crossed. I feel like our nanny likes our kids and wouldn't put them in bad hands, but she also wants to get coverage for herself, so maybe she would settle for someone less than terrific because it's only a few hours a day, but I don't care if it's 20 minutes a day, if they're with my kids alone, I have to really trust and like them. Thanks for the perspective check. [ Reply | More ]

also, keep in mind that trustworthy and "the ideal FT caregiver" are not the same thing. For example, I love that our nanny is energetic and social and can keep up with DS all day long and loves to take him on adventures. I ALSO love that she speaks and reads English well and is totally on board with educational activities. That being said, if she were watching him for only a few hours/day, I wouldn't care as much about these things, as long as she was responsible, followed my directions, etc. because I would assume that the person caring for him for the rest of the day would be the one doing those important (to me) things. Does that make sense? [ Reply | More ]

It does make sense. But 3 hours out of a ten hour day is a decent chunk. And if it's just for a semester, I agree with your thought process, but I think this maybe a permanent thing. I think my problem is that the nanny thing has always been difficult for me. I feel guilty have to leave my kids and as a result, I want it to be as positive an experience as it possibly can be for them. Juggling caretakers just doesn't feel good to me. [ Reply | More ]

If you think this is for more than a semester, I would look for an AM nanny in addition to whomever she refers you to. Plenty of nannies have available AM hours because the kids they've been caring for are in school and the families they work for want to cut their hours. In addition, you may want to consider whether it's a good time to look for a new nanny. [ Reply | More ]

Your alternative is to tell your nanny that the arrangement doesn't work for you and to find yourselves a new FT nanny. [ Reply | More ]

i think you'll need to wait and see. do you know anything about her background and why she's available? my nanny is not a go-getter, her mom pushed her into taking the job with me and i was really worried about it and she turned out to be great. the same things that make her not a go getter made her a great nanny. she's laid back, has a ton of patience with the kids, doesn't mind if they meander or take time to get dressed, etc. is your kindergartener going to be in school in the morning? b/c this might actually be a good time to make the transition, rather than a b ad time. lots of nannies are available in the am b/c the youngest child in the family is starting pre-k or k. So I wouldn't be suspicious of the replacement. However, I would wonder why this class has to be taken at this time and can't be taken at night. that makes no sense. If you nanny is enrolled in a night program, all requirements of the program should be available at night. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, but the room where the food is served is small, so I would keep the party small. I think there were 30kids at the aprty I attended and not enough room for the kids to eat. Add the parents who stayed and the room was INSANELY crowded. the other issue is you can drive into the park, so you have schlep the stuff from either 5ht Ave or CPW. [ Reply | More ]

TOTAL BS. Your odds of getting a truly bright kid into tt ongoing are MUCH higher if you're not competing with a bunch of connected families at tt preschool. My dc attended a 2nd/3rd tier preschool, aced the erb (99s) and got into two tts. Not connected. No diversity. If she'd gone to Episcopal as an unconnected kid, she'd likely have ended up in third tier. [ Reply | More ]

MIL got a photographer that didn't show up until the last 5 min. of the party (she told him to take a hike). All in all, it was not a flop but def keeping it much more low key this year. Actually the description of this party sounds pretty hilarious. Your husband on the floor with the stereo, no toilet paper, and I don't really know what "the sternos cooked everyone out in party." If it were me, if there were drinks for the adults, I think I would just relax and enjoy myself. I mean, it's the company that matters, right? I'd rather go to your party than one where everything seems oh-so-purrr-fect. I bet people had a better time than you think. You have strange co-workers if they told you you have "no couth". It's a funny old-fashioned words and I don't know anyone who uses it. [ Reply | More ]

I agree, and I don't get the whole thing. Is this an east coast party? "Uncouth"? Who are these freaks? A 1-yr old's party is really for the adults and the silly pictures of the baby smashing up cake (baby will recall nothing). So your coworkers can't deal with ppl "below" their extremely awesome status and brilliant ivy educations? Makes me want to puke, what a bunch of snobby losers. I'd find a new job if my coworkers were such jerks. Were there drinks? [ Reply | More ]
