[ - ] Restart: Sister is coming to visit with her family. I invited my brother to come over for a BBQ while she's in town. I haven't seen my sister since March and my brother hasn't seen her in a while either. I know my MIL would like to see my sister and her kids, but I am torn whether to invite her and FIL. If I invite them, it will for sure change the dynamics of the day. I feel like it should be okay not to feel like I have to invite her over, but if I don't, she will probably feel disappointed that I didn't. Dh doesn't care, as we are going away with her parents in a week for a long weekend. WWYD? 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

[ - ] Any recurrent miscarriage moms on? Did you ever end up getting pregnant successfully? 3 losses in one year for me (although one was ectopic). I have done every test in the book and they have all come out normal plus the genetics on the tissue have been normal too. Just really frustrated. Looking for some inspiration. 1 Reply [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I have had 4 miscarriages in 2 years. The first three were at 6.5 weeks, 7.5 weeks (twins), and 5 weeks. The last miscarriage was just a week ago. The fetus had died at 11.5 weeks, 3-5 days after I had a CVS done. For my last pregnancy, it was discovered that I become hypothyroid and have anti-thyroglobin antibodies, but only after becoming pregnant. I had normal tests (no antibodies and normal thyroid hormone levels) 2 months before I got pregnant and at day 27 of my last pregnancy - but the levels were abnormal on day 30. For the last pregnancy, I took levothyroxin (thyroid hormone) and baby aspirin (81 mg) I am hoping that this is why this fetus survived longer than the others (the ultrasound was completely normal at week 11) and that the CVS is the reason I lost her. I am not getting CVS if I get pregnant again. Have you been tested for antibodies/thyroid hormone levels when you are pregnant? [ Reply | More ]

I like NC, love being close to family and dc being close to cousins, etc but I kind of feel like: you only live once, live somewhere fab. I wouldn't do SF with kids unless you know 100% you can do private and have an excellent shot of getting in. The public school system there is a huge headache, completely aggravating. Outside SF is lovely and lots more families w/ young kids--but sounds like you want a big city. [ Reply | More ]

A 1mil would get you something smaller on a small lot that may or may not need some work--but you might be able to get 3 br. Our home is new w/ 4 br/office/bonus room and was over 3 mil brand new. Some towns on the Peninsula it probably gets you more--San Carlos is very nice, decent downtown, good schools, great weather. Housing prices, while not affordable, would be a bit lower than Menlo Park or Palo Alto. If you want easy access to SF then higher up the Peninsula--like Burlingame--would be easier. Burl. has an excellent downtown, schools are okay (not as good as MP or PA but I have friends w/ kids in public there who are very happy). East Bay (Berkeley, parts of Oakland) can be nice too, but I'm not as familiar w/ it. [ Reply | More ]

It really goes on a school-by-school basis and we haven't lived anywhere else so I have no basis of comparison. We were really thrilled w/ DS school this year--public, fantastic principal & teachers, great parent community. I think you get a lot of that here, esp. w/ high concentrations of Silicon Valley types. We love living here--it is more expensive than other places (I'm sure higher cost of living than Durham) but of us it's worth it and we're happy we can do it. [ Reply | More ]

I work in a private and there are lots of dcs of teachers who go at a reduced tuition and I would call that a major perk. I don't have kids, but if I did, I would love this option. There are have been years when there were about 5 "faculty children" entering one year. This takes 5 spots from the outside world. Is it fair? I don't know, but considering teachers work their butts off and don't get a lot of money for it, I would say they deserve it. [ Reply | More ]

Found out we got into the public AFTER the date to tell the private (with in hours). Told the private immediately (didn't give ourselves a minute to think to not hurt the school). They have our deposit. If we had told them by the date we would have owed 50% of the tuition. We missed it by a day. We offered a nice donation. They want 100%!!!!!! I agree a contract is a contract. They don't even need to fill the spot because they over accepted. But can fill the spot in a heart beat. This all happened back in May....so plenty of time. Do I have a leg to stand on? "consideration" as a legal contract term does not mean "being thoughtful of others". It means the quid pro quo for sealing the deal and demonstrating the meeting of the minds which was your original contract. Here, think "consideration" means they give your child a coveted seat in their school and in exchange for school doing that you give them $$. [ Reply | More ]

Now at a very late date (after we signed the contract) we had a mishap of our own. We told them the second we heard. It was one day after the date. I would have thought at worst they would have us pay the 50%. I think it says something about a school that they don't bend. I wouldn't expect them to break the rule entirely. I was just wondering if anyone had a legal point on this. [ Reply | More ]

You can get out of it with the exception of your deposit. They can't make you pay tuition for a year when all available spaces are filled. If you think you do not need to maintain a relationship with this school (ie...you , in no way, can imagine ever sending DC back there or another child or thnk that DC would never care about being a legacy), call your family lawyer (even an estates lawyer) or a lawyer friend and have them send a letter. I know i can;t pick my dd's friends, nor do I want too, but it is becoming painful to be around them. It is all about status and fitting in and trying to be someone she is not with this person. She has completely changed for the worse (or maybe I have changed for the better?) lately. I am really at a loss for what to do. I am just hoping our dc don;t have anything in common come Sept and they drift apart- there are plenty of other kids my dc is friends with and I am sure she will make lots of new friends. Not so hard to get into Stuy. Kids have to take a prep class to learn the logic of the SHS exam and with the practice tests they take, you'll know within a reasonable amount of time before the test if the scores your kid is getting would be high enough for each of the specialized high schools so you can rank them accordingly on the admissions ticket/application. If your oldest is about to enter 8th grade you need to sign him up for a Specialized HS Test Prep course. Some start over the summer, some are intensive in the fall for the 10 weeks leading up to the test. I know lots of kids who've done GRF test prep and had success. [ Reply | More ]

The only thing that counts is the score dc gets on teh Specialized HS Test. Test is used by Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech, Lehman and one other I can't remember. You rank your choices. Your score determines where you go. Your child will need to be prepped for it. I just prepped my neighbor's kid for it. The child had been in second rate middle school, was badly prepared by school, and although bright, was not an academic superstar by any means. Sailed into his first choice (not Stuy). If they're bright, and well prepped, kids should do well. Bard has its own admissions criteria. [ Reply | More ]

The SHS test is for admissions to 6 HS: Stuyvesant, Bx Science, American Studies at Lehman, City College Math Science and Engineering, HS at York College (Queens), Staten Island Tech, Brooklyn Tech. Go to www.insideschools.org for research on these and other noteworthly HS choices (Beacon, Bard HS Early College, Millenium, etc.) [ Reply | More ]

The test for the specialized high schools is in two parts (math and verbal) and is weighted so that scoring very high on one section is better than scoring well on both. 98/55 has gained admission when 95/92 does not. You can look this up in NY Times. [ Reply | More ]

I was a little off in my scores (one year 99/49 got in and 97/92 did not). Here's the Times article link: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/11/12/nyregion/12exam.html?pagewanted=print [ Reply | More ]

There are 2 sides to this idea. Most say you absolutely should NOT prep because the tester will know it. (i.e. your dc will say "oh i know this game, i played it with mommy" and the testers do NOT like that). Others swear you should prep your kid with block and maze games, etc etc. Up to you to decide. It is an IQ test your dc either is or is not going to do well [ Reply | More ]

np: not necessarily true. There are other factors. Maturity is huge. So a child can have a IQ (confirmed later) and bomb ERB. I think the best prep is working with your child (doing whatever) but sitting down at a table and doing the task you say for 10 or 15 minutes a day. That is an issue that could affect (negatively) the ERB. So, I would practice that and just slowly increase the amount of time [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] 32 weeks and my engagement/wedding rings are starting to get really tight - especially when I'm out in this heat. Although I don't want to, I suppose I'm going to have to put them away until after this baby comes. Do others have to do this? 32 weeks seems kind of early to have my fingers swell like this. 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Had to ditch the rings around the same time with #1. Then I really watched my weight gain and salt intake with #2 and never had to take off the rings, even in the hospital. I would start watching what you take in if you want to be even remotely comfortable the rest of your pg--it's not just the fingers, you know, everything is swelling! Not much time left, so it shouldn't be too hard. [ Reply | More ]

I love South Beach. Have been on it for 8 months, lost 42 pounds, now in maintenance. Can see staying on forever. It's not low carb. It's low sugar. The first two weeks are strict and kill craving, but thereafter, it's so healthy and a way of life. Plan is basically no white flour (use whole wheat) or sugar (can use subs). [ Reply | More ]
