do you have a choice? our DD is turning 5 at the end of december and she will be starting K this fall; she sounds a lot like yours and will be the youngest in the class, but holding her back is not an option in NYC, otherwise they can send her straight into 1st grade the following year... np: ditto with my DS. He's a May birthday (but I think cut off is later where we are--Dec. and not enforced). His preschool recommended against him going to kinder because he barely spoke to the teachers there. He had a great year in kinder--still pretty quiet w/ adults or in big groups, but made lots of friends, consistently excellent behavior, had a great time, teacher adored him. We went ahead and sent him because we knew he could follow all the directions, sit quietly, stay focused--those seemed to be important. The quietness and introversion are part of his personality and we didn't think they would change significantly enough to hold him back. [ Reply | More ]

NYC used to let each principal decide whether to give age waivers, but no longer. Now the rule is that you start with your age and if you hold your kid back, they will have the child start in 1st grade and skip K. What they want you to do is start your kid in K and if you are right that the child wasn't ready, they have the child repeat K. It's a terrible policy, but that's what happends when a system is too big to look at the individual. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 07.17.08, 06:38 AM Flag
»
It is not a terrible policy. If you let parents redshirt kids on the whim, you end up with huge age spread in the class (16-18 months instead of 12) which hurts the kids that do start on time. Also, it further disadvantages kids from LMC and poor backgrounds as those families can never afford redshirting to begin with. If the child is clearly not ready they will still let you hold back but you have to have it backed up by more than your opinion. [ Reply | More ]

Okay - Had a personal trainer 1x/week during pregnancy - had her coming asap after baby - sometimes 1x sometimes 2x per week - whatever I could afford - it's 8 months later - I've lost all baby weight (weight watchers and my trainer combined) and have fantastic arms and legs (all my trainer) - still working on much reduced tummy (all trainer) - call her - she is Pilates and personal training - Nina - 917-680-3857 - the best - kicks my butt - she's all I'm gonna miss when we leave NYC [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] DS got ERB score. 98/98/97. Very good report. Any suggestion where to apply? Very arty, creative but not athletic. 17 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Anywhere. Ds won't be rejected based on score. However, it still means the chances are slim. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Is this good enough score to apply TT(I know even 99s are rejected), but in general? [ Reply | More ]

Yes, good enough to apply tt. But then you have all the other hurdles. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Actually he will be going to G&T from fall but I feel private will be right for him. His birthday is Novemver. I want to give a try. If he is accepted to good private we are glad to switch him. DH and I feel DS needs enrichment private can offer. [ Reply | More ]

kmow of one school anecdotally where 3 dcs being removed due to dh losing job, moving to NJ publics. Sure this is happening across the board -- at least one family per school, of course the ages will vary. This isn't related to apps at K, but openings in older grades [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Found out sex of baby #4 today (we did not know w/1st 3). DH just called MIL to tell her but she says she doesn't want to know. Would this bother you? I don't really feel like I should need to keep it a secret when we're w/them in a couple of weeks. 11 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]
