if a DD is turning 5 in July is it the norm to send to K this fall or wait until next year? i'm really on the fence. in many ways i think she is ready, definitely is fine being some place all day and focusing, listening, following instructions, but she can be a bit timid and doesn't always speak up and participate. wondering what is more normal. TIA [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

do you have a choice? our DD is turning 5 at the end of december and she will be starting K this fall; she sounds a lot like yours and will be the youngest in the class, but holding her back is not an option in NYC, otherwise they can send her straight into 1st grade the following year... not for public. and a july kid will be right smack in the middle, since the cut off is december 31. [ Reply | More ]

are you talking about private or public schools? if public, you can choose whether or not to send her, but if you wait a year she'll go right into 1st grade anyway. [ Reply | More ]

You're in NYC? If you are looking at public school, you essentially have no choice, and she'll be smack in the middle of her class, chronologically. She'll be fine. People worry about ds's, they're a little slower, but she sounds ready [ Reply | More ]

agree, she sounds more than ready. Private schools will usually make summer birthdays wait though. [ Reply | More ]

How can you act like this is optional? The schools set the cutoff dates. [ Reply | More ]

I thought it was optional because of where I live now it is optional and my preschool was telling me my daughter was really young because of having a summer birthday. [ Reply | More ]

Sounds like my DD, she turned 5 end of June and is a little timid/shy, although I never questioned sending her. She had a great year in K and is so much more outgoing and confident, it's pretty amazing. [ Reply | More ]

np - if you want an even better long term projection - my dd has a late Sept b'day & was always shy & quiet, found it diff to make friends. But lo & behold she got into Hunter in 7th grade & just suddenly blossomed. Tho still one of the youngest in her class she now has a solid coterie of friends and is filled with passion for learning. np: ditto with my DS. He's a May birthday (but I think cut off is later where we are--Dec. and not enforced). His preschool recommended against him going to kinder because he barely spoke to the teachers there. He had a great year in kinder--still pretty quiet w/ adults or in big groups, but made lots of friends, consistently excellent behavior, had a great time, teacher adored him. We went ahead and sent him because we knew he could follow all the directions, sit quietly, stay focused--those seemed to be important. The quietness and introversion are part of his personality and we didn't think they would change significantly enough to hold him back. [ Reply | More ]

ok, that's what i was thinking too. i was quiet and shy and it didn't change and i started K on the older side b/c i had a november b-day and that was the rule in my hometown. i grew out of it when i was out of highschool. [ Reply | More ]

np - so if ds was born 9/2, he will have to start that year and be young for the class? Or am I confused and he would be on the older side? That doesn't seem right to not give a choise if they are not ready. [ Reply | More ]

In NYC, your child starts public K the calendar year he turns 5. so your kid would basically start on his 5th birthday. He will be on the younger side but far from the youngest. [ Reply | More ]

NYC used to let each principal decide whether to give age waivers, but no longer. Now the rule is that you start with your age and if you hold your kid back, they will have the child start in 1st grade and skip K. What they want you to do is start your kid in K and if you are right that the child wasn't ready, they have the child repeat K. It's a terrible policy, but that's what happends when a system is too big to look at the individual. [ Reply | More ]

It is not a terrible policy. If you let parents redshirt kids on the whim, you end up with huge age spread in the class (16-18 months instead of 12) which hurts the kids that do start on time. Also, it further disadvantages kids from LMC and poor backgrounds as those families can never afford redshirting to begin with. If the child is clearly not ready they will still let you hold back but you have to have it backed up by more than your opinion. [ Reply | More ]

np: that's what we have out here in CA, along with a very late cut off date. It should be changed--at least make the cut-off Sept. [ Reply | More ]
