[ - ] How much should I be paying our housekeeper/nanny. We have 1 child, 5 1/2, who will be in Kindergarten from 8:30 - 3:00, starting September. Our 50 hour/week nanny, works 9-7, does all the regular nanny stuff (picks child up from school and will take to afterschool activities (if any), gives her dinner, babysits full time when no school). She also does all our laundry, cooks us parents dinner a couple times a week, does all household shopping, makes beds, changes sheets, cleans coffee maker, puts away everybody's breakfast dishes as well as medium housecleaning (does floors, not windows and bathrooms). she does a lot and does it well. Has worked for us 1 year, has 2 full weeks vacation, 1 week pay as bonus, plus lots of other random days off here and there. How much should we be paying here/week? 24 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Our babysitter has similar hours and similar responsibilities but does all housekeeping. We pay on the books and she takes home 560; we pay about another $100 in taxes, insurance, etc. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks, how many children and what ages? I guess my issue is we have one child who is gone most of the day. How much more would you pay? She's been with us a year and 1st year was $560 and this morning when we discussed annual raise she said "I get $1/hour". I do think $625 is fair enough, but am concerned about future, as our child is in school longer days and our nanny/housekeeper becoming too expensive (which sounds neurotic, but as 2 working parents we need to plan far into future!) One child, starting kindergarten; similar schedule to yours. I feel like we need full time coverage for vacations and when my son is sick, so I have to pay full time. That sounds like a pretty large raise; we do cost of living. [ Reply | More ]

OP- Agreed, which is why I posted for other opinions. We had a different nanny (only, no housekeeping) when child was 1-4. She moved, we got current nanny, last year, when child was in pre-k 9-2. This is a nice job for nanny/housekeeper, who does a lot of different things for us, but still has time to watch a couple of tv shows every day and is definately less harried than taking care of infants and toddlers all day as was before working with us. First of all, no employee dictates their raise. Can you imagine telling your boss that every year you will get a raise of X amount? You can negotiate a raise, but not unequivically state what that raise is. Second, $50/week raise for a nanny when the child is in school all day is NOT standard. And, btw, that would come out to $610/wk, not $625. I would tell her that this year you will raise it to $610 but that she can't expect to get raises like that every year. [ Reply | More ]

you can have one if you look. there are lots of people who do these "combo" jobs. when you have babies, you think you will never find someone to do child care and house, because many who care for babies don't also like to do housework. As child gets older, there's another whole group of people who are filling to fill the new role you need. [ Reply | More ]

OP - I wish! We are a 2 parent working family and we live pay check to pay check. I, mom, make the medium salary we can't live without, but don't have great benefits. Dad, makes the salary that pays only 1/2 nanny/housekeeper salary, as well as his hobby stuff, but works for big company with KILLER benefits - and he doesn't want to be home with child. If I stay home,we move back into tiny apartment. Child already in public school and we moved to outer borough to have bigger living space (think, sold manhattan studio we 3 lived in and bought 2,100 sq. ft. house). [ Reply | More ]

Could I recommend that you and dh look into an au pair. Since you probably have the space (all you need is an extra bedroom) it would run you through an agency about $176 a week plus the agency fee of $7000. It would be cheaper for you and you get more hours (45 per week) but you would have someone living in your house. Just a thought. I think your circumstances sound ideal for this situation. A nanny whom also does full housekeeping should not make less than 600 per week take home. We pay 650 and we give her a month of vacation time, PAID. I know people that pay as low as 500 and I also know people who pay over 1,000 for this! IT all depends on the work they do and what you can afford... Higher pay is sometimes incentive for them to stay with you. Our current nanny/housekeeper is great and we don't want to lose her to another family. [ Reply | More ]

A FT housekeeper who does some childcare is not the same thing as a FT nanny who also does housekeeping. The FT nanny does childcare for 40-50 hours/week and squeezes housekeeping into that. A FT housekeeper who for most of the year has say 16 hours of childcare and 24-34 hours to do the housekeeping (which is way more time than an apartment or small home needs) is not working nearly as hard. When I was pg to my DD I had developed PUPPS,which is a rash that develops during the end of a pregancy and usually does not heal until the baby is born, although, I was miserable from it and my Dr. had put me on Prednisone which cleared it up immediately. If you are diagnosed with PUPPS - the creams do not cure it, it gives some relief for the moment but not for long. Please, ask your Dr. to put you on Prednisone (about 5 days) and it will go away...hope it's not PUPPS for your sake though - Good Luck. [ Reply | More ]

that's the thing - they've been best friends for two years. i've always known this mom was ultra sensitive about how others treat her dd and worried that if my dd did one wrong thing this would happen. i just hoped that years of shared history would make her a little more sane. the mom has told me she was really shy and unhappy growing up. i think she's projecting on her child. it's a shame, though. something that could have been over in 24 hrs has persisted for over a week. not exactly sure. she actually said that she only sat with the other girl b/c the other one was not going to be at camp the next week. but she had complained the day before that her friend would not let her talk to anyone else on the bus so i think that had something to do with it. i really believe that none of this is a big deal and would have blown over if the mom hadn't gotten involved and talked to the girls about loyalty and how you ahve to be a friend ALL the time - you can't pick and choose when you're friends. they're 8! are they required to be attached at the hip for two soid weeks of camp? It works better when you're nice." If my dd is actually bullying her friend then she is a master manipulater and I have more to worry about than this specific camp situation. [ Reply | More ]

np: here's the thing - bullying involves physical and psychological torment. one child deciding they don't want to hang with another child for a day or a week or to choose one friend over another is in no way bullying. it may not be nice but for that to be interpreted as bullying is overdramatic and for a parent to think they need to get involved in that is way over the top. it definitely depends on the agreement. i imagine that there is no explicit written agreement yet because your divorce isn't formalized (unless you separated pursuant to a separation agreement?) if there is no written agreement, you can ask him to agree to the move (get it in writing!!!). if he doesn't consent, you'll need to petition the court. it is very hard to get the right to move far away -- it is a best interest of the child standard, and if the father has done a good job maintaining his relationship with the kids you will have a tough time getting a court to let you move unless you have a very compelling reason. a close move, that won't interrupt his visitation, will be much easier to get approved. These are symptoms of a lot of things. Take some Tums for the heartburn and sit tight for a few days. [ Reply | More ]

thanks - it's the pale poop that worries me. Can you get pale poop from just a stomach bug? Tums doesn't help. Neither does Gaviscon. rd day of Nexium-no h/b, but still I feel sore beneath my breastbone. [ Reply | More ]
