We go places together and do lots of stuff (I teach so I have the summers off, and all 4 of their parents work full time). However, this month, 2 expensive things have vanished from our house: A digital recording device and a brand new IPod. Our son might have hidden them/thrown them away, but he has never done much of that ever. We have SCOURED the apt. and they are nowhere to be found. 12 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I would adjust the language to "if found, please leave with the office. Thanks!" something like that. But it's a good way to give the parents a heads up if they notice anything new in their children's possession without alienating them. And I would definitely not ask the kids or the parents. It's not worth the potential for alienation of your neighbors - unless you catch someone actually in the act. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] just heard a report on NPR about anti-bacterial soaps possibly being unsafe/having hidden health consequences. Between that, BPA, cigarettes, etc, i really feel like the FDA & Surgeon General should be ashamed. They are a huge bloated beurocracy supported by our tax dollars and they have one job (that i know of) and that is to approve safe consumer products. I'm pissed. 13 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

right, agreed. i'm not actually so afraid, i'm just pissed that they don't question all these chemicals before they go into the products. i'm a pretty educated and health-food-store shopping type, but a lot of people aren't and the govt. should be on top of this stuff [ Reply | More ]

ok, but then i think there needs to be some kind of stamp of things that are totally approved so consumers don't make a wrong assumption that anything they find on the shelves at CVS is fine. [ Reply | More ]

ok, so they can't ban without proof and i understand. but there needs to be a better system of warning about 'possible' problems then, cause seems like the possible problems almost always get proven to be real problems after 10 years of study. global warming being a good example of that, plastics/bpa another. So don't buy them. Seriously. Get natural foods and household products. Do the best you can and try not to sweat the small stuff. BTW, regular soap is very effective at killing bacteria: The fats in soap literally explode the cell walls of bacteria/germs, thus killing them. Antibacterial soap is a waste. [ Reply | More ]

I think the point we are all making, and the people on the old post from yesterday, is that the assumption is she must have reacted badly in front of dc. Parents need to remember that these dc know so much more about what is going on. I remember the entire process, the interviews, the ERB, the visits to schools. I was fully aware of what was happening. When dc #1 and #2 went through this I tried to keep that in my mind [ Reply | More ]

I just read a post from last night about someone who was so angry about being shut out. She sounds out of control and a little crazy. It's scary that ppl get like that. I felt that her reaction was more personal than anything. You would think her parents just rejected her from their family. She needs to just chill and accept what is done [ Reply | More ]

you are just as bad for judging too. We were shut out too so I can see where she is coming from. We applied broadly had high erbs...at ECFS the woman who interviewed us - the one from a few yrs back who admitted on 20/20 that a hefty bribe would get your application a 'second look'- obviously hadn't bothered to even glance at our application- thought ds was a dd- got the basement interview at Dalton, another similar tactic at Friends...point is, I would have rather them called me and said "we think your kid is ugly, don't bother coming in for the 3 visits" then wasting our time. It's a crappy system that has no regard for the parents, and more importantly the children. The whole process is humiliating but you forget all that once you are in...if not, you are left feeling taken advantage of. [ Reply | More ]

I think that some schools are like that and some are not. I agree the process sucks, but didn't find it humiliating even though we also got a basement interview. I did feel judged by some of the schools, but not most. The main problem really is sheer numbers. I do understand how she can feel bitter, but wishing ill on others I cannot understand. I think people are reading too much into it. It's like deciding not to shop at a store due to bad service and telling your friends about your experience. If you walk by one day and they are closed down, you feel some satisfaction that their crappy customer service may have contributed to it (when it could have been the owner had cancer and died). I don't understand why those who weren't shut out can't sympathize with those who are. It IS a numbers game so not all shut outs are crazy freaks [ Reply | More ]

ITA though last night's post did get a bit out-of-hand and it did seem that people were wishing ill on others. Most people who I know, IRL, sympathize with people who were shutout and those who were shutout are happy for those who were not. Everyone agrees that the process sucks and that some schools do treat you horribly. [ Reply | More ]
