[ - ] Public school mom here -- we never applied to any privates. Is there some sort of preliminary vetting that goes on at privates, or does everyone who submits an application form automatically get a playdate/interview? 24 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

you automatically get interview/playdate unless you submit late and they don't have any interview spots left. there isn't a "vetting" process based on the application aside from sibling or legacy status. [ Reply | More ]

everyone gets an interview/playdate who applies, but they definitely sort applications into "yes" and "no" piles as soon as they get them. For those in the "no" pile, they sort of go through the motions with you. The KEY here is not letting on that you are in the "no" pile while they are going through the motions with you. Some schools (like Dalton) for example have pretty transparent methods (like if you don't interview with Babby, you are probably a "no"...... [ Reply | More ]

once they have the full package--ERBs, school report, application with essays and parent's pedigree (career, degree/college/university attended)--they probably do a preliminary sort, then further sort after the interviews/playdate. [ Reply | More ]

So if, say, dc has good ERBS (above 95), good PSreport, dh went to HYP, I went to TTlibarts, have interesting careers, etc., we might end up in the "yes" pile? (hypothetically... just curious) [ Reply | More ]

Do you really think that the basement interview thing is true. I think that they get so many applicants that, unless you are super famous, it is just the luck of the drawl who gets Babby. [ Reply | More ]

definitely not luck of the draw. it's very deliberate and methodical. not everyone who has virtually no shot goes to the basement -- they mix it up and this year sent families to interview at the upper school and in the reception room. [ Reply | More ]

It just seems unlikely. First of all, it is not a good way to keep employees. If I knew that I would be interviewing a majority of parents in the basement whose dc would never get in, I don't think I'd like my job very much. And many people interview before their dc's scores or school reports are in. FWIW, we were interviewed in the basement and dc was reject, but I think it had more to do with the fact that we put every single SS ahead of Dalton on our list and that information was communicated by our PSD. I could be wrong, but I would hate to think that they decided dc would not get in before they met any of us and only knew from our application that neither of us attended Ivies. [ Reply | More ]

The basement thing is ABSOLUTELY true. We had a basement interview when we applied for K (for the 06/07 school year). DH and I joked about being led to the basement afterwords but never talked to anyone about it. The following admissions year (for 07/08) people on UB coined the term "basement interview". Babby admittedly reads UB schools board. This season (for 08/09) nobody had a basement interview. Coincidence? I think not! [ Reply | More ]

We had a basement interview this year. Boy was that a turnoff. They hadn't met DD yet and they didn't have her scores. The dingbat who interviewed us hadn't read the application or my carefully-written essay. We pulled our application, because (a) we thought Dalton was crass and (b)we wanted SS anyway - DD is headed for TT SS in the fall. [ Reply | More ]

I was raised as an only because my brother & sister are so much older. I think it would have been really healthy for me to have been at home w/ a sibling or two. I turned out fine, but I am somewhat self-centered. Also, my parents had a rough patch when I was young and my mom used me as her confidante and treated me like a mini-adult--not healthy, imo. I think that would be less likely w/ siblings around. Now my big sister and (17 year difference) are super, super close. But it would be nice to be closer in age. My kids are 3.5 years apart and are really growing in their relationship and learning a lot of from each other--it's awesome. [ Reply | More ]

i think it's sweet that you are asking this question, because it's clear you are looking at it from the point of view of your child's well being. think a bit about what it means for your life and your husband's life too, of course, and then you'll figure it out. these personal decisions are really hard. don't let anyone sway you because of their own baggage, though. everyone is different and there is no way to tell what the future holds. You would be so bored? How do you know that you would have been bored if you were an only child? As someone with an older brother, yes, you get bored when he's not around but if you are an only child to begin with, you get used to spending time alone and enjoying friendship instead. If you were an only child, there would have been other people who got you into those hobbies and passions. [ Reply | More ]

I'm an only and always wished I had a big brother. I even had a named picked out for him when I was younger. I was quite lonely, but as I got older, I realized I didn't grow up alone. At least not all of the time. I tended to make my cousins and my aunts who were closer to my age my "siblings". I have two boys, 16 months apart. I was married to their father a terrible, violent man. When I found out I was pregnant with #2, I probably should have been devastated, but I was actually thrilled my first son would have someone he could navigate this world with especially when things got rough. They are complete opposites and have very little in common but get along great. The are both away at college, but when they both come home, I know I did the right thing when I hear them whispering in their room at night about the show Heroes, or school, or Lil Wayne's new song. I think siblings have a relationship with each other that is are different from the ones the have with parents or friends. [ Reply | More ]

My husband and I are hving our first (in April) but already are talking about our second. I was an only child and always wanted/will always wish I'd had a sibling. My mother was an only child and also feels the same way. There are many challenges -It is easy to become introverted and unsociable. I often felt bored. It took me a long time to learn to laugh at myself. Also, handling family matters as you get older can be a burden w/no siblings to turn to. My husband has two brothers. He can't imagine life w/out them and loves them dearly. His mom had a tough job raising three boys, but she certainly has no regrets. I am eternally grateful to her since I did marry the third boy. There are upsides to being an only child. I learned to be very creative and independent. I was precocious to an extreme. For instance, I didn't laugh when someone farted. I had to learn to do that fm friends at school! If you are on the fence it sounds like the answer is no/wait. Your only child will be just fine, just take into consideration the challenges/differences. [ Reply | More ]

If you are thinking of getting another child for the sake of your #1, you should consider his opinion. There are dc's who beg for a younger sibling and those who balk at the thought of a younger sibling. You don't want to get a db for the latter and you don't want to deprive a db of the former. I am half serious but it's true. Otherwise, they could be miserable. [ Reply | More ]

This is crazy and inappropriate. Having children is a decision of the parents, not the existing child. Besides, they can change their mind! I never wanted a sister, but now I can't imagine my life without her. [ Reply | More ]

I'm sorry your friend is ill but using that as a case for being irresponsible is going too far [ Reply | More ]

I'm sorry she's using her frustration in this way. It isn't going to help anything. I am an only child as well but would never blame my parents for that - there are many factors that contributed to it [ Reply | More ]

How would her parents have known that she would need bone marrow? To blame them for that seems pretty selfish [ Reply | More ]

no, i think it's irresponsible to only have one. that places too much burden on an only child when you and dh get old and are wearing diapers again. [ Reply | More ]

I am an only and I disagree. My dh has an older sister who is absolutely NO help (actually a hindrance) with his older, ailing parents. If she wasn't around things would be much easier for us all. [ Reply | More ]
