Live in Durham, NC no for dh's job and to be closer to family. we used to live in nyc. Now dh's fellowship is up and he is applying for jobs. What cities should we consider moving to? I like NC, love being close to family and dc being close to cousins, etc but I kind of feel like: you only live once, live somewhere fab. Is that selfish if I know my dc would benefit a lot from being closer to family? I miss the excitement of a larger city--like SF or LA. WDYT? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I'd choose family (especially if you like them) over a city. [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn't do SF with kids unless you know 100% you can do private and have an excellent shot of getting in. The public school system there is a huge headache, completely aggravating. Outside SF is lovely and lots more families w/ young kids--but sounds like you want a big city. [ Reply | More ]

We're on the Peninsula and love it. Good weather, nice neighborhoods, can get to SF or SJ pretty easily. Lots for kids to do. Home prices in a really nice area w/ good public schools runs 1-4mil. [ Reply | More ]

A 1mil would get you something smaller on a small lot that may or may not need some work--but you might be able to get 3 br. Our home is new w/ 4 br/office/bonus room and was over 3 mil brand new. Some towns on the Peninsula it probably gets you more--San Carlos is very nice, decent downtown, good schools, great weather. Housing prices, while not affordable, would be a bit lower than Menlo Park or Palo Alto. If you want easy access to SF then higher up the Peninsula--like Burlingame--would be easier. Burl. has an excellent downtown, schools are okay (not as good as MP or PA but I have friends w/ kids in public there who are very happy). East Bay (Berkeley, parts of Oakland) can be nice too, but I'm not as familiar w/ it. [ Reply | More ]

It really goes on a school-by-school basis and we haven't lived anywhere else so I have no basis of comparison. We were really thrilled w/ DS school this year--public, fantastic principal & teachers, great parent community. I think you get a lot of that here, esp. w/ high concentrations of Silicon Valley types. We love living here--it is more expensive than other places (I'm sure higher cost of living than Durham) but of us it's worth it and we're happy we can do it. [ Reply | More ]
