We moved to NYC 3 years ago. DC thankfully in good private due to dh job, but now it's time to think about high school for my oldest. $$ is tight so hoping he will get into Stuyvesant -- anyone know how they select? I know there is a test, but other than that, any info appreciated. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

There are many other public HS besides Stuyvesant. Friends of ours applied to 12 schools. Her ds got into Bard. [ Reply | More ]

We are partial to Stuyvesant, but of course don't know a thing about the testing process. [ Reply | More ]

That's the problem, the whole town is "partial" to Stuyvesant. The chances of getting in are slim to none. [ Reply | More ]

you best look into some other schools- stuy takes lots of public school students who didn't go to a good private. [ Reply | More ]

But I thought it was a test score admission only? [ Reply | More ]

there are many many very smart kids in public school. There are only so many spots in stuy. Do the math [ Reply | More ]

NP: yeah but as with all test admission there is a cutoff which many won't make and which the very bright will. your point makes no sense. [ Reply | More ]

if it's test score admission only, how could stuy take "lots of public school students who didn't go to a good private?" - it sounds like stuy takes the kids who score at the top, regardless of where they went to school, public or private. and so what if everyone in town is "partial" to stuy. it's a great school, why wouldn't they be partial to it? What the OR is saying is that Stuy is a great school for public school educated dcs. They are not getting the same level of education as at a very good private. Those that score off the charts and do very well tend to go to B or Coll. etc [ Reply | More ]

this is an absurd answer, you must know that. in general, public school educated dcs tend to stick with public school through HS; likewise for private school educated dcs. it has nothing to do with "scoring off the charts," which stuy-bound kids tend to do anyway. [ Reply | More ]

yes but the pool is very large. Just saying that your private school status means nothing. it's all your testing [ Reply | More ]

My spot at private school, mine when I was a dc and now my dcs own spot, has nothing to do with status, it has to do with education and level of academic rigor and preparedness for excellent further education. Only people not born to it feel some level of status is suddenly adhered to them because they go to private, a notion which is ridiculous. [ Reply | More ]

Not so hard to get into Stuy. Kids have to take a prep class to learn the logic of the SHS exam and with the practice tests they take, you'll know within a reasonable amount of time before the test if the scores your kid is getting would be high enough for each of the specialized high schools so you can rank them accordingly on the admissions ticket/application. op: DH was transferred and his work place was extremely helpful in getting us applied to lots of schools that happened to have last minute openings for older kids. We were very lucky, and they were really helpful. [ Reply | More ]

If your oldest is about to enter 8th grade you need to sign him up for a Specialized HS Test Prep course. Some start over the summer, some are intensive in the fall for the 10 weeks leading up to the test. I know lots of kids who've done GRF test prep and had success. [ Reply | More ]

The only thing that counts is the score dc gets on teh Specialized HS Test. Test is used by Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech, Lehman and one other I can't remember. You rank your choices. Your score determines where you go. Your child will need to be prepped for it. I just prepped my neighbor's kid for it. The child had been in second rate middle school, was badly prepared by school, and although bright, was not an academic superstar by any means. Sailed into his first choice (not Stuy). If they're bright, and well prepped, kids should do well. Bard has its own admissions criteria. [ Reply | More ]

The SHS test is for admissions to 6 HS: Stuyvesant, Bx Science, American Studies at Lehman, City College Math Science and Engineering, HS at York College (Queens), Staten Island Tech, Brooklyn Tech. Go to www.insideschools.org for research on these and other noteworthly HS choices (Beacon, Bard HS Early College, Millenium, etc.) [ Reply | More ]

The test for the specialized high schools is in two parts (math and verbal) and is weighted so that scoring very high on one section is better than scoring well on both. 98/55 has gained admission when 95/92 does not. You can look this up in NY Times. [ Reply | More ]

I was a little off in my scores (one year 99/49 got in and 97/92 did not). Here's the Times article link: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/11/12/nyregion/12exam.html?pagewanted=print [ Reply | More ]
