[ - ] »Because our economy can’t handle it. People need to help themselves." I am the OP of an earlier post about the end of the federal boost to the unemployment benefits, and just came back and saw this last reply. This really makes my blood boil. You think DH and I wouldn't LOVE to "help ourselves" and get back to work???? DH has been in the restaurant industry for over 20 years (fine dining, no chance of outdoor seating where he was) and IS applying to other types of jobs to no avail. My industry is also hard-hit and I'd be willing to take any job I could if I could get an interview! These are not normal times where people just need to pull themselves up by the bootstraps and get a job for god's sake. 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Hang in there please. I just hope to get a job so I can start again on my own. [ Reply | More ]

Somebody who claimed to be in-the-know (and take it with a grain of salt; I don't know if this is true or not) once posted a comment answering the same question as yours. She said that there are two ways UB can ban you. One of them just bans you, and the other one bans you and deletes all your posts and comments from the past few days. Again, I have no idea if this is accurate. But if true, then the second one would explain what you're asking about. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] How assertive are you about money decisions when the money is DH's? DH has a bit of a record of making poor investments that I have called as being bad ideas at the time, but this was before we married so I did not push him. Now we have two children and I have moved into a lower paying job to be more available for them. He recently inherited money and is looking to invest again, and again I think is making bad decisions. One position that it's his money and I should stay out of it. The other is that he's made a number of representations to me about the life we'll be able to give our kids on the basis of this money, so I deserve to have a say. How would you handle? 10 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

With my dh, all money is our money. You are allowed to insist on getting professional advice together, and it doesn't have to be because of his previous poor decisions, it can just be about moving forward with a clear financial plan. Also, a plan can include him having a percentage to "play" with, but that comes after you both agree on the big picture. [ Reply | More ]

You are all in good marriages I guess, that is the way it should be. But my dh won't even check with me for investments or other... he moves all money and decides where it goes/what it is for - as a matter of fact he manages all of it. My friend's DH moved money out of their joint account to his own account. He then secretly bought a condo and came home from work one day and said he was moving out. 4 days later, GF moved into the condo. She eventually got her share but it took a divorce. I have seen this a number if times (worked in the cannabis industry for a time, which is a frat boy culture nightmare across the board). If he's creating this culture, it's because he enjoys this culture. He will just remove the buzz kill (you). OP, listen to the above poster! This is the right advice. I was in a similar culture and realized too late that the VC team funding the company had forced my hire in an attempt to fix what they saw as a frat boy culture. Unfortunately the exec leadership team and founders were happy with their frat boy culture and did everything possible to marginalize me, bash my ideas, and scrap my projects. I quit and it was the right thing to do. But it did sting to see all the work I’d done that they’d dismissed suddenly get revived as “their” initiatives. [ Reply | More ]

I think the issue is not so much the tier of the school, but rather the layout of the school. Poly Prep and Dwight Engelwood, for example, are not TT, but they are close to Manhattan and have campuses. They are going to have a much easier time doing in-person instruction than, say, CGPS, which is similar to those schools in terms of its selectiveness, but has a lot very small spaces in their buildings and no real outdoor space. Actually, I can't speak for middle and upper school at CGPS, but my kid is in the lower school, and they have the space and the staff to split all the classes in half. The staff thing sort of matters too; fortunately the grammar school has two co-teachers in each class. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know if they are open, but they are nowhere near as disgusting as they were, say, back in the 90's. Honestly, I think they have been pretty much fine. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Anyone else cleaning out stuff after being cooped up at home for several months? DH went crazy and made 12 fresh direct bags of giveaway items this weekend (kids old backpacks, 2 of the 4 baseball bats we have, spare bike pumps, clothes, everything we never use). It seems extreme, but he wants to live leaner with less clutter. I view it as stuff we are saving for a future possible need. 27 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

He is right. We don;'t need any of this crap. I did this when we last moved and have not missed a thing. Somehow there's always a bag or baseball bat or bike pump around even after the purge. [ Reply | More ]

OP - we have 3 bike pumps. He says we need 1. I said what if it breaks. He says we will buy a new one. I say that's a waste of money. He is very transactional, and says that clutter destroys 5,000 dollars of happiness for him each year, and he is fine to spend a few hundred each year buying stuff he needs instead of storing closets full of backup stuff. I see his point, but can't he just deal? He wasnt like this before the lockdown. It seems compulsive. [ Reply | More ]

Does it feel like clutter? If there's an organized place for the pump you use and the backup pump, that seems reasonable. But if they're just tossed on a garage shelf amid a bunch of other stuff and you can't access them easily when you need to, then it feels burdensome. Maybe there's a middle ground here? NP: This sounds like things here. We have so much back up that it keeps me from enjoying what we have. There are people out there who can use your things now, which is less wasteful in the big picture. What percentage of these old things will you really ever use? You seem more compulsive than he does. I totally agree. And we have kept so many things "just in case" only to forget that we have them, or not remembered where they are when we need them, so that we ended up buying a new thing anyway. My DH is the hoarder of "just in case" items and I am always the advocate for tossing things. [ Reply | More ]

We aren't all-in on Marie Kondo, but DH and I adopted a live leaner - but with nicer stuff - approach 10 years ago. Nicer apartment, a bit smaller, but higher end. I got rid of lots of my clothes, shoes and bags, and he did the same. We got rid of old pots and pans and dishes and mugs. And old electronics, HDMI cables, and the like. We kept meaningful items. Everything else we cut by 50% in quantity, and upgraded across the board. We are so much more content at home now. It's like being in a personalized luxury residence. [ Reply | More ]

I disagree. We have hoarded scarce and critical items (meat in freezer, cleaners, gloves), but literally ditched 15 moving boxes of useless items. One box was just AV cables and extension cords from 1995 to today. We also sent a box of photos to get digitized - came back on CDs. So nice. [ Reply | More ]

We have 2 rice cookers, 2 vacuum cleaners, 9 rolls of partially used wrapping paper, 6 old winter coats, and 2 step ladders clogging up our entryway closet and shelves. We even have bulbs that fit no fixtures we currently own! I feel sad whenever I open it. I wish we had one nicely stored vacuum, one rice cooker, one new modern step ladder, and 2 stylish coats in the closet. But I cannot muster the will to do it. [ Reply | More ]

My ex kept everything. So much went into storage. He often couldn't find items in the storage we paid dearly for and would just go out and buy another - which eventually went into storage as well when item wasn't needed. I finally cut this hoarding parasite out of my life. It was a stupid way of life. I only buy what I need and know exactly where it is. [ Reply | More ]
