The chappaqua story is likely similar to other places. I know so many families who travel frequently between Westchester and Florida or Italy. Our family got sick from a family who returned ill from Italy in early March. Their DC still attended school because there were no tests available and no clear guidelines about what to do, and the idea was that kids couldn't spread the infection. There is a lot of debate about that stil, in our neck of the woods. After all, camps, sports practices, and pools are all open and running full swing. All I can say is many families we know are now quiet about their travel to Florida and some definitely give their kids Motrin or Tylenol when they have a fever, because they don't want their kids to have to miss more (sports practices, pool time, camp, etc depending on the age). Just saying.. [ Reply | More ]

Since everything is opening up, why not? There are just as many people congregating in the grocery store, at the park, at the salon, at outdoor restaurants. No. I would want to know who was going to be there and how they have handled social distancing so far. I agree, my parents live in Italy and the country is doing well now, because pretty much everyone has taken this seriously. Even after reopening, the numbers have gone down. in some provinces masks are still mandatory when going out. Even the beach clubs have taken precautions and therefore some people have been able to go on vacation... they think this country has not handled it well. And honestly, I believe more should have been done in certain states, especially where I am (not NY). Makes me sad. [ Reply | More ]

MD Mom: no. A barbecue with one other family with kids who we know well and have been cautious is all the risk I can tolerate right now. Even still, someone has to always go to the bathroom inside the house unless you live literally next door and can go to your own house, kids get close to each other, and nobody besides me and another physician would wear a mask. You cannot control other people's behavior or risk tolerance. [ Reply | More ]

I think that is a lot of people and it is really hard for kids to social distance. I think if it was a smaller group, it would be fine, but you are asking too much of the kids alone to be able to stay apart from each other. Signed mom in a low, low covid area with kids. [ Reply | More ]

Beatrice is dandelions growing, vibrant and yellow, out of a crack in the cobblestone road or a low stone wall along a road somewhere in Connecticut or a bright lemon tree unexpectedly thriving in the backyard of a tract house in California. Before you think I’m implying softness, Beatrice is strength and dignity, though; in a fantasy novel, she would slay her own dragons, would not need to be rescued, would be a commander in the service of the queen. Sally! Sally is so cute. I imagine Sally as being pleasant-featured and a little soft — a round jawline, giant doll eyes, maybe a pout. If Sally were a fabric, the name would be a blue dress with white Swiss dots, a gathered waist, andantes swingy skirt. It tastes like cherry Icees from the gas station when you’re a kid, the kind that leave your tongue striped blue and red, or the little candies you hid in your coat pockets to eat on the walk home when you were a kid, little stolen bits of sweetness on the days when your breath made crystals in the air. I automatically imagine all Elliots as little boys with bright eyes and a mop of curly hair, sitting cross-legged with a stack of books... or old men in tweed jackets with leather patches, standing in a classroom where dust swirls in the sunbeams, expounding on how writing isn’t about expressing yourself, it’s about capturing an experience of human emotion (his students don’t get it yet, but they will one day). The only thing separating the two Elliots is time, really. Elliot is a forest-green color and smells like my grandfather’s old car: leather and a little bit of sandalwood with a hint of something clean and sharp. [ Reply | More ]

As someone with synesthesia, I love the name Serena! It’s a name that is silver and white and midnight-blue to me, like those cloudless spring moments at dusk when the last of the moonlight hits the dewdrops in a way that makes them glisten and shine like pearls. It tastes like honeysuckle, and it smells like sunscreen and chlorine and summer heat. I tend to associate it not with stillness and calm but with friendship and goodness — the drive to be a good daughter, a good friend, a good citizen, a good worker, a good influence (and the flip side of that, which is the anxiety that maybe you’re not). I'm not worried and happy to send back if there is a clear and organized plan (NYC public). We've been VERY strict with lockdown, masks, etc these past 16 weeks, so definitely will do so cautiously, but think it is necessary for the kids. I'm more worried about being shamed by friends and other parents who disagree though. [ Reply | More ]

I totally agree with making a 100% remote option available for those who volunteer for it (including those who are at country homes, etc.) But the shamers will tell me that sending my kid is putting everyone else in the city at risk. And I do get the sentiment behind it - we're a "low risk" family, but have stuck strictly to the quarantine for the good of the city. [ Reply | More ]
