Are there parents here who don't want to send kids back in person in September due to risk? No flames- just curious how many people are worried about return v. worried about remote. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Yes! Me. Less due to risk than due to overall quality of life compared to where we could stay. [ Reply | More ]

I'm not worried and happy to send back if there is a clear and organized plan (NYC public). We've been VERY strict with lockdown, masks, etc these past 16 weeks, so definitely will do so cautiously, but think it is necessary for the kids. I'm more worried about being shamed by friends and other parents who disagree though. [ Reply | More ]

pp- I would never shame anyone even though I'd rather stay away. Part of staying away might make it better for those who want to send back. [ Reply | More ]

I totally agree with making a 100% remote option available for those who volunteer for it (including those who are at country homes, etc.) But the shamers will tell me that sending my kid is putting everyone else in the city at risk. And I do get the sentiment behind it - we're a "low risk" family, but have stuck strictly to the quarantine for the good of the city. [ Reply | More ]

Hate that feeling- when you are doing your best and people think the worst of you. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know anyone who would shame me for sending my kids in; most people I know will be in line with their kids too. Anyway, I don't care what they think, my kids need school and socialization way more than other people need drinks or restaurant food and hair coloring and pedis and all those other things that we decided to open before schools. Pediatric groups say kids need to be in school in person in the fall: https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/30/us/aap-kids-physically-in-school-wellness-trnd/index.html [ Reply | More ]

I agree kids as a general group need to, but maybe someone's specific kid does not. [ Reply | More ]

pp. agree. I am glad they came out with this statement though, for the majority of kids who are low risk. There should still be options for those who aren't. [ Reply | More ]

This. High risk kids and anyone who doesn't want to go should be able to follow a remote learning plan that mirrors what's going on in the classroom (like via Skype or something). I think 100% of kids should be on laptops whether they are in school or not, all following the same lesson plans on Google Classroom so that there is no double work for the teachers. [ Reply | More ]

How does does this actually play out in real life. Not the total remote learning part but the kids sitting behind their laptops in school when the teacher is right there. [ Reply | More ]

They're not sitting behind their laptops - they're sitting and listening, learning, jotting, etc. But any work that is completed (worksheets, essays, math tests, etc.) are either done on the computer or uploaded and submitted to Google classroom. [ Reply | More ]

It's really going to be the only way teachers, in-person students and remote students can all stay in sync with rotating days. [ Reply | More ]

+1. If we were to do a partial remote where some kids go 2 days, other kids go 2 days, and everyone is remote on the 5th day of the week, I would gladly give my DC's 2 days up to someone who needs their kids there full time [ Reply | More ]

Yes. Me. We will send kids to school at our beach home if needed. But I honestly can’t see how NYC won’t offer online exclusive for those that elect - ie immunocompromised kids, parents etc. I think likely offered at city level not indiv school level [ Reply | More ]

Me. The safety measures sound really miserable and in my opinion won't really address contagion. I also don't like the uncertainty. If school opens, it will be shutting again in the not too distant future. I'd like to be able to plan. [ Reply | More ]

Not me. I want them back in person. Impact of mental health and learning is huge. But we are also low risk family and social distance from grandparents (masks, backyard). [ Reply | More ]

Dear god please send them back with risk mitigation protocols in place. IMO, The social/emotional harm that is going on due to isolation and remote learning is more damaging to their health than the risk of virus spread. Everyone will get this virus. We just need to slow it down to not overwhelm hospitals. This can be applied to school settings too. [ Reply | More ]
