Same thing with my DD 13. I try to encourage her to do non-screen activities, but there's only so much I can do. She seemed OK until this week, but for the last few days she's become increasingly anxious. It doesn't help that some of her friends have been getting together in a non socially distant way. (We are in NYC and we are not seeing friends unless masked and outside and distanced.) [ Reply | More ]

The rental and backyard BBQ OPs are good examples, and we see it a bit with schools: posters asserting that it is obvious that schools MUST reopen or absolutely won't reopen, because it suits their preferences, and they are utterly baffled that there is any disagreement on the subject. I wonder if these people were spoiled as children, or what the genesis of this attitude is. 17 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

sometimes I express views on UB which are not 100% my views, not to troll, but as a way to think through an issue. I guess it's like a devil's advocate type of thing. The flip side of this conversation is the lemming mentality on this board, whatever the tone of the first responses is often carried on in all responses and loses focus on the question at hand. I'm a teacher. Here's what happens to "get classrooms ready". The custodial staff cleans everything, wax the floors, etc. That is being done now, whether we go back or not, just like each year. Then, about a week before teachers come back for meetings, some staff come back a prep their rooms. Some more, just do things as school starts. That's it. There isn't anything else to "getting classrooms ready". Principals and sped teams are working on the sped schedule, which every single other scheduled thing in the school revolves around. Then specials are scheduled. But that can all happen at home. You will not know what is happening for sure until about 2-3 weeks before school starts. This is how the DOE does stuff. The best thing for parents to do now is to make 3 different contingency plans. One for DL, one for hybrid, and one for full in person. [ Reply | More ]

DOE Teacher too - what kills me is that even though custodians wax floors - they throw our furniture around and we have to slave like dogs in order to get it set up the right way. I fear that corners will be overlooked and still unclean. PP: Point is, they need a Plan A, B and C so they can roll out as appropriate. The reality is no one knows what conditions will be like in Sept. Could be terrible, could be great. - need a plan on site learning. And if schools open in September, cases could increase and shut down again. So need a plan to do remote only if/when that happens. My point is planning for multiple scenarios is needed. And planning for REAL online learning with appropriate standardized tools and models for all students is needed - there are many schools where there was zero interaction with the students, and I'm talking about SHS here too. DOE needs to prepare for best (in school + remote for those who opt for various reasons ) and worst (remote all year). Is that going to happen with our esteemed Chancellor and his enourmous team of highly paid administrators and that expensive consulting contract for Covid related support? Doubt it. [ Reply | More ]

They are all saying the same thing -- they will open unless the Governor keeps all schools closed. They are planning for 3 possibilities -- all remote (extremely unlikely); a hybrid; all in person. They know there are some children whose health (or the health of someone they live with) won't allow them to return in person until there is a vaccine and they will make accommodations for those students. They all believe some sort of hybrid is the most likely. They will tent fields to get more square footage, they will use common spaces to get more square footage. The admins and many teachers are working over the summer to make whatever happens the best it possibly can be. [ Reply | More ]

It’s owned by a private family and we asked the landlord to put it on the market for rent again ASAP. He stalled for two months and finally the listing was posted in June. The broker keeps calling to ask us for concessions, first to pay his fee which we said no way to, now that we offer to pay the rent for a new tenant to move in. Aside from the fact that we’ve continued to pay the rent on an apartment we’re not using, where all the services we were paying for have been suspended, I think it’s absolutely obnoxious that the broker is bothering us with this stuff now. Nobody is renting apartments in NYC either way. If the owner is serious about finding a tenant they need to cut the rent substantially, like 30+%. Our paying shouldn’t be expected or required. We’re giving the landlord access to the apartment and months of lead time to find a new tenant. We’re leaving either way [ Reply | More ]

I agree that you aren't on the hook for the broker fee. As long as you keep paying rent until September, that's all they can ask of you. But if they ask you to pay the fee or concessions after the fact as a condition of letting you out of some of the money you owe until September, that would be lawful of them to do as they are only mitigating at this point, trying to help you not be on the hook for the entire rent until then. What stuff is he bothering you with? You waited for your landlord to contract a broker, instead of finding one you like yourself. And the reality is no one wants to rent without some concessions. A lease is a contract. If you want to bring a suit seeking a declaration that the lease is void because you are not able to use the services, you can do that, but otherwise you are stuck, nothing about the pandemic has voided rental leases. Even if, by your assertion, they could have used the same pictures, they couldn’t do showings and move someone in. Your lease goes until September, so the landlord is trying to help you out- if you had paid for July, which you were going to have to do anyway, he can offer than concession to the new tenant and get you off the hook August. dh was in the hospital recently at Weill Cornell for 3 days for IV antibiotics. They tested him for Covid before transferring from ER to regular floor. I was also worried about Covid as he was there for 3 days, refused to wear a mask and take any precautions, in a shared room. Its been 3 weeks since his admission, and we are fine. But it was a hell of 2 weeks post admission worrying about transmission to myself and DC as we were together in an apartment. They should test for Covid at point of discharge as well. I nearly lost my sanity.Good luck. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, DH did general anesthesia surgery (but went home day of surgery) at the beginning of June. Everything went fine. I dropped him off at the door, and the nurse brought him back to our car on the sidewalk, so I never went in. [ Reply | More ]

Is the babysitter going to pay also? When a lot of sitters say they want $20 and on the books, they don't realize that $20 is going to be net like $18 after the taxes THEY are supposed to pay. If you are going to pay all the taxes for both of you, it adds like 25%. If she pays her part, like 10-15% extra. Those numbers may be off but not a ton. [ Reply | More ]
