Taking bets on when the DOE will let us know what the plan is for school. Is there any chance they will give us a heads up in say early August? Or is that a pipe dream? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Was just thinking the same thing today. Fear that it will be end of August. 3 days into the summer vacation with no camps and no vacation planned, I'm already losing my mind. Counting down the days until dcs are in school whether in the building or remote. It's awful. [ Reply | More ]

Well mayor just said no eating inside at restaurants so.... why would he let kids and teachers crowd inside a school? [ Reply | More ]

This is exactly what they should be doing: prioritizing schools over restaurants, bars, salons, sporting venues etc. We get a certain amount of risk to spend as a community, and we should spend it on what matters: https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/06/26/nation/reopening-schools-scientists-say-proceed-with-caution/ [ Reply | More ]

A friend who is a teacher (public) told me BOE is working on a plan to bring the youngest kids back as much as possible. Zero discussion to date about HS kids. Not even on the table. Trying to get the young ones back at least part time so parents can return to work. [ Reply | More ]

They have to announce in July so parents can make plans. Of course plans can change but presumably schools need time to get classrooms ready. Did you see Scott Stringer demanded an answer by 7/3? [ Reply | More ]

I'm a teacher. Here's what happens to "get classrooms ready". The custodial staff cleans everything, wax the floors, etc. That is being done now, whether we go back or not, just like each year. Then, about a week before teachers come back for meetings, some staff come back a prep their rooms. Some more, just do things as school starts. That's it. There isn't anything else to "getting classrooms ready". Principals and sped teams are working on the sped schedule, which every single other scheduled thing in the school revolves around. Then specials are scheduled. But that can all happen at home. You will not know what is happening for sure until about 2-3 weeks before school starts. This is how the DOE does stuff. The best thing for parents to do now is to make 3 different contingency plans. One for DL, one for hybrid, and one for full in person. [ Reply | More ]

DOE Teacher too - what kills me is that even though custodians wax floors - they throw our furniture around and we have to slave like dogs in order to get it set up the right way. I fear that corners will be overlooked and still unclean. We need plexi barriers and such - I am pessimistic and my school building has an amazing custodian - so it's not on him- he's just severely understaffed for what needs to be done. [ Reply | More ]

Unless you are licking the desks, touch surface based transmission has been shown to be rare. What is the DOE doing to make sure that schools have hand sanitizer, working sinks, SOAP and paper towels in every bathroom, PPE for staff and students, wipes, etc?? Did they order the stuff or will it be last minute scrambling again? [ Reply | More ]

or: My post was referring to exactly this - the DOE is broke and I work in an amazing school with kids who have no resources - there is no PTA or class parent situation to do a drive for hand sanitizer and wipes - [ Reply | More ]

I teach kindergarten. Kids lick desks, each other. They sneeze all over each other. They pick their nose and wipe it on the big rug. They don't wash their hands after going to the bathroom. And many, many other disgusting things. I've seen kids put their hands down their pants, scratch their itchy bottoms and then wipe poop on papers or on the rug. Yes for real. These are not rare events. And yes, this is gen ed. [ Reply | More ]

All NYS districts had to submit plans to State that will be reviewed and approved or not. Assume mid july is related to that? Couomo and NYS regents have been working on their own guidance too. [ Reply | More ]

PP: Point is, they need a Plan A, B and C so they can roll out as appropriate. The reality is no one knows what conditions will be like in Sept. Could be terrible, could be great. - need a plan on site learning. And if schools open in September, cases could increase and shut down again. So need a plan to do remote only if/when that happens. My point is planning for multiple scenarios is needed. And planning for REAL online learning with appropriate standardized tools and models for all students is needed - there are many schools where there was zero interaction with the students, and I'm talking about SHS here too. DOE needs to prepare for best (in school + remote for those who opt for various reasons ) and worst (remote all year). Is that going to happen with our esteemed Chancellor and his enourmous team of highly paid administrators and that expensive consulting contract for Covid related support? Doubt it. [ Reply | More ]

Of course nobody knows exactly what the state of COVID will be. Why does NYC have such a worse time than anywhere else just coming out to say, if COVID is at X level, then we will hold school on these terms. If COVID levels are at Z, then school will look like this. Instead, we are all agape, watching for the Mayors crystal ball to make a decision. Why can’t they even release criteria for MAKING a decision? [ Reply | More ]
