One thing I find interesting on this board is how convinced some people are that their wishes represent the *only rational way* of seeing a situation. The rental and backyard BBQ OPs are good examples, and we see it a bit with schools: posters asserting that it is obvious that schools MUST reopen or absolutely won't reopen, because it suits their preferences, and they are utterly baffled that there is any disagreement on the subject. I wonder if these people were spoiled as children, or what the genesis of this attitude is. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Yeah, you typically see this kind of blind confidence in their own beliefs in men. But these posters seem to be women... [ Reply | More ]

I think everyone has blind confidence behind the screen. Especially those who can’t express that when they are not behind the screen. [ Reply | More ]

sometimes I express views on UB which are not 100% my views, not to troll, but as a way to think through an issue. I guess it's like a devil's advocate type of thing. To be clear, I usually see some merit to the idea, and post it as a way of hearing feedback or sharpening my understanding. [ Reply | More ]

Right, but if you are seeking feedback/understanding, you are not furiously arguing with anyone who disagrees with you and insisting that they are objectively wrong and stupid and don't understand, right? [ Reply | More ]

There’s no consequence to being wrong and if it’s turns out they are right they just to walk around and tell themselves in their head “I told those ladies on UB! i was right!” Since no one actually admits to going in here IRL. [ Reply | More ]

Social media and the internet has made this worse IMO. I also think highly educated people can be quite guilty of this. [ Reply | More ]

+1. I cannot believe former co-workers who are highly educated and the articles the post on Facebook claiming they are gospel. [ Reply | More ]

Politics is like this today, too. No nuance. You are SANE. Or you are RACIST. Or you are RIGHT. Or you are CRAZY. Or DEPLORABLE. And each side sees the other as not just misguided, but INSANE. [ Reply | More ]

With current politics we have become polarized because many of our politicians have become so extreme. And there isn’t much nuance with racism. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I've seen this in the real world, but not to this extent. I guess if someone is so resistant to considering other viewpoints in the real world, I just wouldn't engage, whereas here you see the whole thing play out and they keep doubling down. [ Reply | More ]

true dat. also young generations have lost the ability/opportunity for honest debate, preferring echo chambers and safe spaces to hide out from reality. [ Reply | More ]

The flip side of this conversation is the lemming mentality on this board, whatever the tone of the first responses is often carried on in all responses and loses focus on the question at hand. The rental OP yesterday was frustrated by the broker but everyone kept saying she should pay the rent, which she was doing either way. Also there are a few nutters who respond over and over to the same post [ Reply | More ]
