I think it's shitty for people to have a party in a playground right now. They're basically coordinating a large group to arrive all at the same time (who wouldn't have normally have been there at that time), making it even more difficult for everyone else to properly socially distance. Space and time is limited for a lot of people. I'd be pissed if the one hour I was able to break away from work to take my kids out for much needed exercise was thwarted because of some big group. Also, I know nobody ever does this, but you're technically supposed to get an NYC Parks Permit for any organized group gathering. The city is not currently issuing these now, so clearly they don't want people doing this. [ Reply | More ]

You don't need a permit for under 50 people. I'm inviting 4 kids to my DD's birthday in the playground in two weeks and already looked into it. Also, depending on teh number of kids, I don't see anything wrong with me having a party there because my DD and the friends we are inviting would usually be at the playground just about every day anyway, so it's not actually bringing in "more" kids to the playground. "From the smallest birthday party to the largest concert, special events take place every day in New York City parks. If you want to have any activity in a City park with more than 20 people, or where you would like to reserve a specific area within a park, you need to apply for a special event permit." And I don't think that meeting up with 4 kids is what OP is talking about when she said, "My friend invited everyone." Four kids and their guardians is just like an outdoor playdate, not taking up massive space. [ Reply | More ]

Me. I will say, I do not have DCs yet, which I think makes a big difference. Pre-COVID, I would walk with DH to his office and get on an M1 to mine. I work in a very loud, open floor plan office. Headcount has grown 30% since I started and we don't have a single inch more of office space- they just keep moving desks closer and closer. There are never enough conference rooms, so I have been forced to take many calls on the dirty floor of our service elevator vestibule. I would leave work around 7 and get home around 7:30. I have MS, and the commute really takes a lot of my energy, so after I got home, I would feed the dogs and then sit on the couch alone and read until DH got home around 10 or 11. Now, I have SO much more energy- I can sleep later and I don't have to use all that energy to commute. I get to hang with my dogs all day. I get to eat dinner with DH 7 days a week. I don't waste mental energy on what I am wearing or how my hair/makeup looks. [ Reply | More ]

But there seems to be a lack of effort from UFT to say, "we weren't at our best during initial remote learning, but here's how we're going to promise live instruction, better communication to parents, clearer guidelines for grading..." Its just - let us stay home and make full salaries because its not safe for us to return to work. I actually agree that its not safe, but its not any less safe than a multitude of other jobs that are better in person. They just seem unwilling to make ANY concessions. DH is a teacher. Neither of us has issues with him going back in person. Also, even if RL is improved, there are a ton of issues that cannot be addressed. For large groups of students, it just won't work. Young kids, kids in adverse home environments, kids with special needs. Well as a labor union I don't think it's within the UFT's scope to make improvements to the remote learning instruction; that falls on the DOE (though the UFT has to agree to certain stipulations). As a teacher and UFT member, I will add that I don't think UFT and "teachers" are necessarily synonymous. It's not as if anybody has ever actually consulted with me or my colleagues and asked how I feel about XYZ scenarios for next year. In our most recent chapter meeting, a lot of the conversation was about updating our technology for next year which I believe would improve remote instruction for students. For the most part (pre and post covid), our asks are along those lines, tools that will improve our practice and effectively improve instruction for students. On a school level, we haven't had any conversations about next year's arrangement except to review and unpack the information coming from above. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, but as I mentioned it's not as if me or my coworkers are actually being consulted about these decisions, so to suggest "teachers" want or don't want something is misleading. I also think there's way too much emphasis on this board about live vs asynchronous instruction which is really short-sighted. It's a complex approach that requires a lot of nuance. Ultimately I don't believe it's what makes or breaks decent online instruction and again, it's not as if my personal views are being shared with the UFT head honchos. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I've been doing that my whole life! We don't even really have snacks in the house except chips and salsa (DH eats them, I do not), low fat cheese sticks, and seaweed snacks. And for the most part, I only eat twice a day. I do drink a lot, and when I cut back, I lost 8 lbs in like a week, but it's come back even with cutting back. I have my thyroid tested monthly (not related to this)- my TSH is the lowest it's ever been, but still in normal range. I am distraught. [ Reply | More ]

I wish I were like this. I am constantly nauseous, but an empty stomach makes it worse. The only things that make me feel better are simple carbs- plain pasta, rice, soft bread. [ Reply | More ]

I sort of "weaned" myself off bread; perhaps something like vegetables so that you won't have an empty stomach? [ Reply | More ]

That's not a bad idea. I used to get those veggie trays from Citarella every week. I should start that again. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks! I really liked them. I was very, very skinny as a kid/teen. I started gaining weight in my 20s-30s. Depending on where in the US you live, you would have said I was either "average" or "thin" (solidly a size 6). Now I think I might actually be medically overweight? (5'7, 155 lbs) and I'm just not used to dressing for this body. [ Reply | More ]

I think in-person school can happen, but it is going to take a lot of creativity, flexibility, and extra resources (esp. transportation), all of which are sorely lacking in the DOE. [ Reply | More ]

I think their big issue is transportation. Only a tiny percentage of kids live within walking distance (we are lucky to be among them). Parents I've spoken to in Queens & Brooklyn are very hesitant to put their kids onto subways for 2+ hours a day in September. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I attended a condolence call / Zoom for a friend who lost a parent (not sure if to Covid or not). She’s quarantined with her family but not one of them was there while she had this call. I feel badly for her, or is that reading too much into it. If my DH at the least hadn’t been by my side, I would be very hurt. 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

You're reading too much into it. This was probably his chance to go to the bathroom or something. Let her talk alone with her friends, whatever. [ Reply | More ]

My DH would have assumed I wanted to have a little space and privacy to talk with my friends. He's super loving and supportive, but I guarantee he would not have attended a call of this nature unless I specifically asked. [ Reply | More ]

I've lost both parents (not during Covid though) and if I were doing this type of call, I would definitely do it by myself, not with dh. He's already supportive and it just wouldn't be necessary. [ Reply | More ]

I agree that you are reading too much into this. Also, one thing I learned quickly after I married (we lost our moms within the first two years) is that everyone mourns differently. Give people space to mourn in their own way. I'm sure her DH is supportive, but maybe he was helping make arrangements, doing something else that was needed during that time. [ Reply | More ]
