There's clearly a push from teachers on these (and other) boards about their safety being at risk to return in person. But there seems to be a lack of effort from UFT to say, "we weren't at our best during initial remote learning, but here's how we're going to promise live instruction, better communication to parents, clearer guidelines for grading..." Its just - let us stay home and make full salaries because its not safe for us to return to work. I actually agree that its not safe, but its not any less safe than a multitude of other jobs that are better in person. They just seem unwilling to make ANY concessions. Am I missing something? That’s what I don’t get... teaching *isnt* a job that can be done well remotely. And I’m not sure why teaching is held up as a special class separate from all the other jobs which can’t be done remotely... [ Reply | More ]

DH is a teacher. Neither of us has issues with him going back in person. Also, even if RL is improved, there are a ton of issues that cannot be addressed. For large groups of students, it just won't work. Young kids, kids in adverse home environments, kids with special needs. Sure if the whole city is closed, we have no other choice, but if retail stores are open, schools should be open. [ Reply | More ]

THIS THIS THIS. Teaching is not a job that can be done from home. End of story. If you can't deal with that, find another profession. [ Reply | More ]

This is exactly why I am anti-teachers union. I have no problem with them demanding safety, but they're basically demanding a paid one-year vacation. [ Reply | More ]

Well as a labor union I don't think it's within the UFT's scope to make improvements to the remote learning instruction; that falls on the DOE (though the UFT has to agree to certain stipulations). As a teacher and UFT member, I will add that I don't think UFT and "teachers" are necessarily synonymous. It's not as if anybody has ever actually consulted with me or my colleagues and asked how I feel about XYZ scenarios for next year. In our most recent chapter meeting, a lot of the conversation was about updating our technology for next year which I believe would improve remote instruction for students. For the most part (pre and post covid), our asks are along those lines, tools that will improve our practice and effectively improve instruction for students. On a school level, we haven't had any conversations about next year's arrangement except to review and unpack the information coming from above. [ Reply | More ]

Wasn't it the UFT that refused to allow principals to require teachers to do live/Zoom teaching? Unbelievable. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, but as I mentioned it's not as if me or my coworkers are actually being consulted about these decisions, so to suggest "teachers" want or don't want something is misleading. I also think there's way too much emphasis on this board about live vs asynchronous instruction which is really short-sighted. It's a complex approach that requires a lot of nuance. Ultimately I don't believe it's what makes or breaks decent online instruction and again, it's not as if my personal views are being shared with the UFT head honchos. [ Reply | More ]

Don't act like all teachers have zero input. While they might not be asking YOU personally, of course there are teachers driving these demands. Don't be obtuse. [ Reply | More ]

My point is that whomever those teachers are, they are distant enough from the majority of us to not be representative of us as a group. [ Reply | More ]

What a remarkable position you’re in. You seem to have no control over your entire professional experience. [ Reply | More ]

That's what union labor is. Yes, you're part of an organization that advocates on your behalf but you don't get to negotiate raises with your boss, determine your own schedule, or broker parental leave policies. We have to clock in and out; there is very little flexibility. Personally, I prefer this way of working, but it sounds like you would not. [ Reply | More ]

You elect the union leaders. There's a big difference between "Hey Jim, I'd like you to tackle parental paid leave" and "Hey leadership, we need to ask everyone to rise to the occasion and perform at an adult level of remote working or we're going to go down in flames." [ Reply | More ]
