[ - ] Since my dad got sick and died this summer I can't stop shopping. I am not buying things I can't afford or anything but it just feels like all I want to do is shop. I'm overeating a little bit too but mostly just shopping. I'm a little worried because it's unlike me and I don't want to accumulate crap. So far it hasn't been too bad I just wonder if I should take steps to stop, or let it run its course as my coping mechanism. I did this a little after my mom died too. I also have a ton of anxiety and can't sleep. 10 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

oh, I just want to reach through this computer and hug you. no matter what, just be compassionate with/to yourself. love yourself as much as you can through this and don't judge yourself too harshly. this is hard. maybe try meditating or sitting quietly with yourself in the mornings, going out for long walks? plan things in your day that don't have to do with shopping. read good books? only you know what your list is... yes! you need "self-care" of the highest order, and I don't mean spa days and wine and the typical stuff (although that's not necessarily bad) - I mean GRACE and space to really let yourself heal. talk to a therapist, have a good meal with a good friend, take naps, make a playlist of your favorite songs (just yesterday I made a great playlists of songs I love from the 60's and 70's... so so good! haven't stopped listening)... I keep adding to the list but like I said before, only you know what your list is. make a long one that you can draw from in times of need. [ Reply | More ]

Be gentle to yourself. My parents both have a lot of serious health issues and I’m experiencing something similar. I know I’m spendy, so mostly I stay out of stores or use my shopping urge to order basics for my parents. I did sign up for a skincare subscription box -it’s $25/month but it distracts me from bigger purchases and satisfies the self care urge. [ Reply | More ]

My dd wears glasses and she's adorable and people compliment them (too much if you ask me...in the way they do because they want to mention them but can't think what to say). When someone is a target, everything about them is a target. When someone is "cool", everything about them is considered cool, from their accessories to their name. Bullies (and later, abusers) choose the person, and then start picking on everything about that person. They don't pick on a person because of any one feature. [ Reply | More ]

Glasses are a sign of weakness, in that one can't see well without them. But we're not animals, we're human beings. Your daughter needs her vision corrected and that will be true whether she wears glasses or contacts. She's not the problem--the as-yet-nonexistent bullies are. I was teased for wearing for glasses, my ds is 14 and has been wearing glasses since he was 8. He has not been teased for them, ever. Times have definitely changed. He is a teen and we are forcing him to wear contacts now (appt for fitting when they come in stock next week) because it is part of a two pronged approach to try to slow his eyes worsening. He is also taking eye drops for it. There is so much new research now and I wish we had known about the eye drops and contacts sooner. [ Reply | More ]

the contacts will not slow progression. it is too late. I wasted a lot of money on them for my teen and another eye doc said there is no evidence at all that it would work at that age. I felt really cheated. the drops are still in clinical trial. Our kids missed the boat on these new technologies. [ Reply | More ]

His eye doctor said that she has seen the drops slow progression even in her tweens and teens, and my ds started in feb and was not complaining he couldn't see by august (he was getting a new prescription every 6 mo) so I will take it. His prescription had changed (just tested him again now in Sept but it was not a huge jump like before). They are running a trial out of their office. I am willing to try the contacts, hoping the type she ordered are better than before. They were hopefully going to slow my progression when I was a kid but they didn't help a huge amount (or maybe they helped and my eyes would have been worse?) I'm sorry these things didn't help your kids. [ Reply | More ]

Based on my family's experience, it depends. I think things have changed somewhat. I was teased a lot for my glasses as a kid: first in my grade to wear them, thick lenses. Now glasses can be cool, as long as they are fun and don't modify the visual appearance of your child's eyes too much. Thin lenses are fine, thick lenses that reduce the size of your eyes significantly and give you a bit of a different look are still uncool. Add braces to the look, and... yeah... not too good. My DD, who needs a heavy correction, notices that people treat her differently when she wears her contacts. [ Reply | More ]

I have two. In both cases they are devoted to their wife. In one case, we socialize mostly as couples, in the other case, my DH is always invited along and comes maybe 2/3 of the time. That guy is of my parent's generation. We email, but don't text to stay in touch. In both cases there is an emotional boundary. We talk more about events and ideas than emotions (as I would with female friends) [ Reply | More ]

Saying you hate your job is different from speaking "negatively of the organization." Which was it? I really think these are different. People are entitled to hate their jobs even now and then. "Ugh I am so over this job it's so boring" is very different from, e.g., "no one in management knows what they're doing and they have some shady business practices. [ Reply | More ]

Having organized almost every PTA event at my kids' schools over the years (sad, i know!), volunteering to help out at any of event is easy. The coordinators of the events send out a sign up sheet. Sign up for an hour or two (setting up, sell tickets or food, etc). That's the easiest. Volunteer to help out for a few hours at the book fair during the time when your child's teacher brings her class down. That is what a lot of parents do. What is work is organizing any of these events. Don't take on that role and you will be fine. Any help you give will always appreciated. [ Reply | More ]

Class auction project. You get a minimal budget and you need to come up with a craft all the kids can participate in. I had a 3rd grade class sign a big platter with their names and had it sealed and fired one year, bought a small wood chair and had a K class do hand prints and names. It's a bit of running around for about a week, then you are done. And most of the interaction is with the kids not the PA, which is its own kind of refreshing [ Reply | More ]

Yes. A few ideas: 1) Set a manageable goal for yourself (2-year anniversary?), you can always change it. Then focus on the positives that you are achieving for yourself and count down each month and day with joy in your heart. 2) Start looking for a new job anyway. It will give you a mental boost and if you find something better you will not need to explain yourself in the future. 3) Be a bit obtuse. Kill people with pep. They will give up on you (to some extent) if their drama and BS does not seem to affect you one way or the other. 4) Add one fun hobby to your life and do it at least once per month. My book club kept me going through some pretty challenging years. 5) Consider doing a medium chill on your job even if this is the last thing you want for yourself. This does not come naturally to me but toxic colleagues do not necessarily deserve your best. GL. [ Reply | More ]

I would start looking but also practice boundaries. You are not expected to be perfect, nor on at all times. Give them your best during x number of hours a week and draw a line around the best. They may fire you, but they may do that because it is a toxic environment. If you don’t learn about boundaries, you are b3coming part of their mess. [ Reply | More ]

I hear you. My parents were the same. Dh has taught me that life isn’t about how many hours you put in for the office. It really is a better way to live. Now if it is the culture of the place to overwork, having some resumes out there is good. But if you are trying to react to the toxicity by proving you are worthy by overworking, it will not fix them. [ Reply | More ]

Figure out what the minimum is to get by and do only that. Do not go above and beyond or try to perform to your typical standard. Do the work well enough to keep the job and nothing more. Don't volunteer for projects. Don't aim to be overly helpful or go out of your way for colleagues.
