[ - ] Is anyone (or know of anyone) having their DC take the Hunter HS test just to see how he/she would do, but have no intention of attending? DF's DC just started in private for 6th grade and qualifies for the test. DF thought it might be good for her DC to take the test with no intention of moving the child. I think it is crazy to add a day of stress to her DC. I wonder if others do the same. 30 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Make your parents weekend hotel reservations early - and make sure you're on the VT side. The online hotel places will go by distance without telling you that it's as the crow flies, so they will list places on the NY side of the lake. I had a bad surprise when I was up and we had a nice dinner where I had wine and then got into my car only to find out that the hotel I had chosen was 60 miles driving distance, around the lake. I was okay to drive, but it wasn't ideal. The ferry is apparently easy to use but I wasn't figuring that out at 9pm on a Friday. [ Reply | More ]

The 2s are very difficult to get into and I don’t think there are a lot of open spots for K. My kids are in K and 3s and are thrilled to go to school every day. Sigh. People know so little about this issue. The composition of the milk changes as the kids age to be formulated for the stage they are in then. The mother's antibodies she produces when she exposed to things are still passed in the bm. There are benefits even for toddlers. OP should not feel guilty but there is nothing ridiculous about bfing to age 3, even in the US. [ Reply | More ]

People forget that humans are still mammals, who evolved over a huge period of time. The complex biological relationship between infant and mother is not easily replicated. When parts of it are disrupted, it can have consequences far beyond the immediate. [ Reply | More ]

calm down. has it occurred to you that breastfeeding for 3 years might be a tremendous physical burden to a woman? There's a point where the cost of breastfeeding for years begins to outweigh the benefits, but as a Sanctimommy, you probably wouldnt be interested. unreal. You clearly believe that a woman's time is best spent feeding pre-schoolers from their own breast. [ Reply | More ]

You are all kinds of wrong here. Look at the comment "3 years is really ridiculous" and then the "but as a Sanctimommy..." - these comments don't help the conversation. There are real biological benefits to both mother and child, that even apply in the US to do extended breastfeeding and discussing them does not make someone a Sanctimommy. This kind of rhetoric only hurts people. No where does ANYONE on this thread say OP should feel guilty, because she should not. There are sanctimommies on this thread. [ Reply | More ]

Took galactagogues, had 3 (three!!!) lactation specialists work with me, pumped for hours to get 1-4 ounces max for a couple months, etc. etc. I was so disappointed my body wasn't able to feed the child I brought into the world. I did try, but DB was losing weight and increasing bilirubin levels so pediatrician suggested I supplement with formula. I did a combination for 3 mo, and when I had to go back to work, realized that the amount of time I spent pumping at work was an additional hour or two that would keep me from spending time with DB& DH. I think BF is great because it’s kind of like your own personal gift to DB, but beyond the initial colostrum, I do believe the health benefits are overstated, to a degree that fuels a tremendous amount of undue mommy guilt. +1 - THIS - breastfeeding is great if you want to and are able to do it. The health benefits are completely overstated. Check out "Cribsheet" by Emily Oster. I don't feel badly now. She's thriving, I'm thriving. All is good. You will continue to have other opportunities to care for your baby. Don't beat yourself up because mom-hood is hard work! The visits count as demonstrated interest, but some sessions are so heavily attended that you do not get to talk to the rep at all, so not much besides a sales pitch really. This. Ask them what they like to do on vacation and what they would like to see in Europe. Also, they are teens, so make them do half the research and planning. [ Reply | More ]

I feel like either one of those choices would be fine but depends what you want to do. There are lots of non-museum things to do in all of those place. [ Reply | More ]

Walking the cities, seeing all the monuments. In Paris for teens: top of the Eiffel Tower, Bateaux Mouches down the Seine, Seeing St Chapelle, eating ice-cream on ile st Louis, going to Montmatre, walking through the latin quarter and shopping, sitting at cafes and people watching. In London: London Dungeon tour, Buckingham Palace, riding double decker buses, Bourough Market, London Eye. In Amsterdam: Anne Frank House, riding bikes, walking around different neighborhoods, Van Gogh museum. You don't have to go into all the museums, but pick a few and spend an hour or 2. When my family went to Paris my brother met up with a friend (also on vacation there), bought hash, and nearly got arrested. That might be fun! [ Reply | More ]

Toronto. Take one day to see Niagara Falls. It's only an hour's drive from Toronto. Take the Hornblower boat into the falls...your kids will love it! [ Reply | More ]

My family likes to eat. Lots of things to eat in T.O. but it's very spread out. Downtown Montreal is cuter, more picturesque. [ Reply | More ]

I was in Niagara on the Lake in August with my 10 and 8 year olds. They enjoyed Fort George but other than that, there's nothing to do. It's a town for older folk who mosey along the main street looking in the tourist shops. [ Reply | More ]
