Is anyone (or know of anyone) having their DC take the Hunter HS test just to see how he/she would do, but have no intention of attending? DF's DC just started in private for 6th grade and qualifies for the test. DF thought it might be good for her DC to take the test with no intention of moving the child. I think it is crazy to add a day of stress to her DC. I wonder if others do the same. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I think it’s a great idea. There are lots of tests to be taken for college -making them less scary no stress is a good thing. Why do you assume stress will be involved when the results are irrelevant? [ Reply | More ]

+1 . there will be no stress or pressure on the kid . especially if the intention is to stay put . Kids take tests all the time. How about the test to assess for learning disabilities. Tons of kids take those and they can be two days long! [ Reply | More ]

Oh it will be stressful! Are you kidding? Your dc will be surrounded by kids who are nervous -- really, really nervous--for this 3 hour test. It will not be fun. Someone cried when my dc was taking it last year. [ Reply | More ]

what qualifies you to take the test at that point? I see no harm in it. Kids don't always take on all the stress in these situations . especially when the DC can easily stay at the private . so no pressure. just an experience and way to gauge DCs test taking ability [ Reply | More ]

Yes, doing the same. Why not? My kid is good at standardized testing and likes the challenge. [ Reply | More ]

no harm in taking, but what if DC gets in? Are you taking a spot away from a child who would attend? [ Reply | More ]

isn't there more to admissions than just the test> ? and no, the schools plan for not everyone enrolling even if accepted [ Reply | More ]

Hunter is not the same. It's one test and they don't overaccept because of yield much. But there is no such thing as "taking a spot away" from someone [ Reply | More ]

She is equally entitled to a spot there, she in not taking it away from anyone. [ Reply | More ]

Hunter has a wait list. If DC is accepted and turns down the spot, Hunter will offer it to the next child on the wait list. [ Reply | More ]

Not really, because they will fill from waitlist. [ Reply | More ]

But it involves pulling the kid out of school on a school to take the test. Is it worth it? [ Reply | More ]

I didn't take go--dh did it but it was not a fun or relaxing day. Dc got in so worth it for us but I wouldn't recommend it just for practice. [ Reply | More ]

My kid was in private but I considered moving him so I had him take the test. He got in but he didn't go. His friend in private also took the test although parents had no intention of moving him. My kid is not especially great in math and he could barely get through the math. There is also a personal essay that they have to write on the spot. [ Reply | More ]

How do you know if a kid in private is qualified? I thought they used state tests [ Reply | More ]

np. private kids who don't take state tests can qualify if they get scores in the 90th percentile plus on alternate tests. For most NYC private school kids, that's the CTP5 test. [ Reply | More ]
