Do you throw in the trash ripped or stained clothing? My DS is the king of ripping his pants at the knee! It feels like a waste to me, but of course no one at Goodwill or wherever is going to buy it. Is it better to trash that stuff or give it to Goodwill because they may recycle the non-sellable stuff. I'd be happy if it got chopped up and made into stuffing. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I make rags out of old clothes. Keep a bucket of them under my kitchen sink. [ Reply | More ]

Why bother? You can buy bulk white washcloths cheap at Costco (I just paid $10 for 24) and use those. It takes time to cut up old clothes and they are usually made of the wrong fibers for cleaning. [ Reply | More ]

I move my busted clothes into the garage. I use them for gardening or painting. When those clothes get too nasty, they go in the trash. [ Reply | More ]

even those could be recycled. You should donate them if they don't have chemicals on them. If you soaked them in round up, just throw them out. [ Reply | More ]

Puleeze. Have you watched documentaries on what happens to most clothes that are donated? They are sorted and sold off by the ton and shipped to Africa where they are sorted and sold off by the ton, etc. It is one thing to donate clothes that are wearable and quite another to donate clothes with massive rips, tears and stains on them. They don't even want them in the most destitute parts of Africa! [ Reply | More ]

np. What is the problem? if they are in a sellable condition, someone in Africa will reuse them and buy cheap clothing. If they are not, they get made into floor rags. Either way, less waste and someone gets to reuse them in one form or another. [ Reply | More ]

You need to give it to goodwill because the cloth of the unsellable stuff will be sold internationally for textile recycling in to new products. [ Reply | More ]

OP: oh that's good to know thanks! Somewhere I read that Goodwill didn't want that stuff, and it makes more work for them to have to sift through it. Ok, into the donation bag it goes. [ Reply | More ]

np. Many farmer's markets accept old clothing for recycling. I personally keep them for the cleaning lady, she likes actual rags. [ Reply | More ]

Our area is environmentally conscious so honestly not only does it save $ not to buy new clothes every time a pair of leggings has a hole in it but it's now socially acceptable [ Reply | More ]

Do you know anyone who is learning to do machine embroidery? (I know, it’s a stretch.) Particularly beginners are always looking for things to test designs on. They’re best tested on fabric similar to what you plan to do the end design on. [ Reply | More ]

Please don't donate that stuff to Goodwill. If it makes it to the sales floor someone might buy it, not noticing the tear or stain. I have bought stuff there and discovered at home it was unwearable. There are textile recycling collection points at the farmers' markets. On the other hand, if it is denim or fleece, give it to me to make hammocks for my rats! [ Reply | More ]
