[ - ] Oy, I contacted an old bf on linked in just to say HI. Haven't seen him in 30 yrs. He asked me if I am a Tiger Mom, and I said that my kids probably think I am , but no, I think I'm fun. He then tells me he and his wife disallowed TV for first 10 yrs or something, and that he made a rule that if one of his kids asked him to do something, he would never say no - ever. I guess he got me feeling like a bad mom, so I then responded that my dh and I are more relaxed, but my ds turned-out really smart and highly motivated, so I guess it was ok. Today, crickets.... 12 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I'm genuine and nice! I talk to cashiers, bank tellers, random women in my yoga classes etc. I read "How to Win Friends and Influence People" and it changed my daily interactions to be more friendly and positive (without needing anything in return). I've found it's helped my perspective on humanity quite a bit. I used to be very depressed, cynical and grumpy. Being friendly has really helped me be happy. [ Reply | More ]

My philosophy as an adult with friendships is that if someone is still around after 3-4 years then they are a real friend. I've cycled through so many people like you describe and then you turn around and see that some people are still there who don't annoy you. I choose to make an effort with those people. I'm happier and have learned. [ Reply | More ]

don't stretch yourself for private would be my first thought. tour everywhere and see what dc thinks. sounds like dc may be a good candidate for ICE. get on their open list immediately as it opens up. if you can't get an assigned seat, try showing up anyway. it's not a UB favorite, but super popular with my IRL friends. test scores won't matter (just about the entire middle school opts out), but understanding the school and being a good fit go a long way. what about School of the Future too? Also, DC is currently in progressive but genuinely hungry for more academic challenge. Progressive has been good for him but he's had enough. I think actually CSS would be the best fit. That lower ELA score is not representative of the kid, every teacher he's had will agree (idk what happened there. I probably should have prepped some). Qualified for CTY in both quantitative and verbal (though we never had the money for their expensive programming). [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Even my pediatrician isn’t sure of the cause of my child’s inner ear itch. Can I get your opinion? Started 2 months ago. Was in only 1 ear until a couple of weeks ago. It only itches a couple of times a day, but always after shower which is at bedtime and in the am. DC was in a couple of swimming pools this summer but not sure if it itches prior. She has no allergies that we are aware of. We were using a heavier conditioner at this time, but I switched to a fragrance free super sensitive one a few days ago, but it still itches. Dr says seasonal allergies since she saw no excess wax or infection in her ear. But then if it were seasonal allergies, wouldn’t her ears itch more when outside?anyone BTDT? In general medications that are absorbed locally like nasal spray are preferable to ingested meds like Claritin. Because they only affect that specific part, not the whole body. That said, there are steroids in Flonase, and I know the bottle doesn’t recommend for children under 9. [ Reply | More ]

Paramedic Mom here: You can call your local non-Emergency Police Department line and ask for a "wellness check." State exactly what you just said above, and that you're a concerned neighbor. They might check the house and/or they might contact family. It's always good to get stuff like this documented because if there is a pattern or another person calls in something regarding the same individual they can pull this report. Thanks for being a good neighbor! [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Spin off to on line dating post. I realize I get in my own way with trying to meet someone. Here are some reasons why, both practical and more psychological—1) I have limited resources for keeping my appearance at date worthy levels, 2) I’m still traumatized by the failure of my marriage, the toll on my self esteem , 3) I’m embarrassed about my financial situation, 4) deep deep down I feel I still need to be 100% available for my kids (now teens). Even though shared custody ds sometimes requests to stay with me .. 5) facing reality of limitations of my options. I’m lonely and don’t want to be alone but these issues are holds my me back. If you’re divorced/single, what holds you back ? If you overcame, how? 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I am sort of disgusted with men. (Society at large, the patriarchy, etc.) And with myself for letting them matter so much to me and basing my view of myself too much on what they thought of me. Obviously this comes from upbringing, I have been to therapy to deal with the issues, but I’m just not sure I want a man in my life again anytime soon. [ Reply | More ]

I was you and then one day, after about 10 years (seriously!) and a bunch of therapy, I was just done with my pity party. Made some other changes in my life, started taking better care of myself (doesn't cost anything to exercise a bit and take a few minutes to style your hair and you can buy some clothes that fit well on sale). Then I decided that I was truly ready to meet someone and I did. Mind over matter is real and it's amazing. [ Reply | More ]
