Help me figure out our middle school options! DC is 5th grader in public school. Public schools: We live in district 4, no viable middle school options in district, so only citywide/boroughwide schools. We will list CSS, ICE, Manhattan East, NEST+m. Other ideas/recommendations? Private schools: we will need fa to make it work. HHI 120K, renting, no assets, one DC, first generation Americans. DC is strong student, creative. Where should we apply? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

4th grade ELA 3.56 and Math 4.41 (I know chances are nil for NEST). No ISEE yet. ERB scores in 2nd grade were very high. [ Reply | More ]

That ELA is going to be an issue. My son had all 4s on state tests, 75% 4s for final grades, good attendance and behavior and didn’t get in to Salk or Clinton, which are easier to get in to than citywides. That said, still not easy to get in to. [ Reply | More ]

Sorry, what do you mean 74% 4s for final grades--do you mean that the other 25% were 3s or lower? Thanks! [ Reply | More ]

Yes, he had 4s in math, science, social studies, behavior, Art, gym and 3s in reading and writing. [ Reply | More ]

don't stretch yourself for private would be my first thought. tour everywhere and see what dc thinks. sounds like dc may be a good candidate for ICE. get on their open list immediately as it opens up. if you can't get an assigned seat, try showing up anyway. it's not a UB favorite, but super popular with my IRL friends. test scores won't matter (just about the entire middle school opts out), but understanding the school and being a good fit go a long way. what about School of the Future too? My dd is from D1 and just graduated from SoF. The school is small enough that if you ARE really interested you can reach out to the principal and make sure she knows its your first choice [ Reply | More ]

Also, DC is currently in progressive but genuinely hungry for more academic challenge. Progressive has been good for him but he's had enough. I think actually CSS would be the best fit. That lower ELA score is not representative of the kid, every teacher he's had will agree (idk what happened there. I probably should have prepped some). Qualified for CTY in both quantitative and verbal (though we never had the money for their expensive programming). [ Reply | More ]

fwiw, my dc is at ICE and is very academic and loves the school. ICE is challenging, just doesn't do the common core which is why we like it. lots of difficult texts, lots of writing, and advanced science. math ramps up. [ Reply | More ]

sorry, but I had two kids at ICE and it is not at all challenging. Lovely place and my kids dug it, but it is not at all academic rigorous (still, they had the experience of loving school, which is invaluable). Both left for h.s. One is at B.S. and the other at Beacon. [ Reply | More ]

That would suggest it is a decent middle school! [ Reply | More ]

Not really, IMO. My kids loved the fun of it, but frankly, even they knew they weren't learning much, and it was too loose. They are just good test-takers and students. I would not credit ICE for that. And fwiw, my ds was not well-prepared for BS. [ Reply | More ]

my dc was there for middle school, and i do think it was a strong program (the math was not great) overall. a motivated kid can get a lot out of it and have support, one who isn't can easily coast. dc was very well prepared for hs, except in math. [ Reply | More ]
