Are there any genuinely nice people out there anymore?? Every time I meet someone that is kind to me, I usually find out that I’m just being used for something or another (carpool, MLM scheme, buying their new fashion line, etc). I give up. I’ll stick to my 5 close friends. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I'm genuine and nice! I talk to cashiers, bank tellers, random women in my yoga classes etc. I read "How to Win Friends and Influence People" and it changed my daily interactions to be more friendly and positive (without needing anything in return). I've found it's helped my perspective on humanity quite a bit. I used to be very depressed, cynical and grumpy. Being friendly has really helped me be happy. [ Reply | More

+1. I think I am a good person but I am not particularly outgoing and it's probably because I am guarded. I encounter so many selfish and/or shallow people. It always strikes me as odd that so many people out there seem to be genuinely unhappy. And some of the happiest people I know have had their share of adversity. [ Reply | More

I think I'm genuinely nice and not a user. I am great at making friendly chit chat and having a laugh but I never know how to move beyond that and make "friends" with someone. Or the few times I have tried emailing the other person or extending myself to possibly meet up, they are always wishy washy or end up flaking. So I don't even bother anymore. [ Reply | More

My philosophy as an adult with friendships is that if someone is still around after 3-4 years then they are a real friend. I've cycled through so many people like you describe and then you turn around and see that some people are still there who don't annoy you. I choose to make an effort with those people.
