I went to a social worker. I found that they (generally) are better at not getting to the "cause" because there isn't just one, but helping you both to move on. DH didn't have sex with someone but lied and lost my trust. The basic take away is that the cheater/liar has to allow for absolute transparency, make lifestyle changes to avoid a repeat and take not being trusted (for a while) and the one who lost trust/cheated on has to decide to let the past go. In brief, that was 18 months of therapy. 11 yrs later, I'm glad I stuck it out. [ Reply | More ]

I am similar to you. I’m raising 2 SN kids and dealing with my own personal issues as well. I just can’t do it all. Some days it is disappointing and work seems vapid and with no growth. But I am here. I have a job. I know it sounds sad but I have to accept this as it is at least for now. Plenty of people my age are aged out and I still have something. Every week people I know in high powered jobs are being let go. Honestly? It might be better to fly under the radar. High earners are in the crosshairs, at least in my industry (finance). Fascinating. Especially the part about how names travel down the social classes. Jennifer of the 70s is from a well off family but as you travel through the 80s Jennifer gets poorer. i was the same age of MLP when this all went down and had two younger female colleagues who were quite vocal about not liking having an "old" female boss (could hear them complain through the sheetrock walls as well as to a colleague/old friend outside the org who told me everything - dumb move). They even spread rumors about the "real" reason about why I had surgery, which was not the case. Again, why are you telling one of my oldest friends? My friend concluded that it was mix of immaturity and envy - I was married, had a house, etc and they were single and struggling and oblvious to the fact that I was ten years older than them. Rather than look inwards, it was just easier to blame the person who expected them to meet deadlines, show up to work on time, etc. One ended up fired and the other one moved on to "greener pastures." Latter ended up being fired from another post later for misuse of expense account. So yeah, a "very" specific" memory. Guess even Claire Danes now says she didn't grasp the consequences of her actions (and that does not absolve Crudup). [ Reply | More ]

Yes but we finally got it right with #3. First baby - picked a unique name (not in top 500), but 3 months after birth a TV show introduced a new, very popular character and soon this formerly uncommon name skyrocketed to top 5. No others in the same grade with the name, but many younger kids! With #2 we picked my grandfather’s brother’s name. It was around #300. But there were 2 others on his sports team with same name! Child #3 - we picked a name that was quite popular In our generation. While a very “normal” name, it is now uncommon and he’s one of a very few. So when we tried to be a bit different, it backfired. The most unique name of all our kids was right under our nose all along! Think something like naming a girl Susan now. [ Reply | More ]

We took it into account but it wasn’t the deciding factor. She’s named for my grandmother. I also wanted a classic name that wouldn’t scream “American” (i.e. something recognizable to people in other countries.) Pick the name that you love. How many successful men are named John, Jeff, Dan, David, etc. In fact, the most popular names of today are still less common (by percentage of births) than they were 60 years ago. [ Reply | More ]

Popularity isn’t what it once ones if you look at the numbers meaning the actual number of girls being named Sophia now doesn’t come close to the number of kids named Jennifer 40 years ago. People are using a wider variety of names now. That being said, sure. A Sophia/Sophie has a better chance of knowing more kids with their name then someone with an unranked name, but it is still a crap shoot. DD has 20 girls in her K grade. There is 1 Sophia, but 2 girls share a name that was ranked in the 900s the year they were born. [ Reply | More ]

I have a lot. Coaching services can be great and really give you a kick in the pants and get you on the right path (life, health, nutrition, fitness, executive, dating, etc.), BUT many of these services find they make more money when they sell the "how to sell" too their clients doing the coaches. I mean who doesn't want the quick path to success? All coaching services are definitely not like that, but many are and it really leaves a bad taste! [ Reply | More ]

A friend did a 9 month course and has styled herself a health coach and is trying to drum up clients. She's also selling essential oils. Knowing her as long and as well as I do, I think it would be hard for her to be an effective health coach because food issues are usually emotional/deeply rooted, and that's just not something that she's experienced or has ever been sympathetic about. Even her little pitches on insta are judgy or condescending. It can't be easy to try to start this business (but it really shouldn't be because it's like being a snake oil salesman, in a way). I wouldn't bother w a consultant when you first need spots to be open. the schools don't even usually know how many spots until the time of year when contracts are due for the following year (Jan or Feb usually) and also some people sign the contract and then get work transfer months later so the spot opens up last minute. Which grade is this for? I have DD at one of the schools you mention. Best to reach out to school admissions office and ask if they are accepting apps for x grade next fall. Even if they have no spots, they can keep you on a wait list if they like you and let you know when something opens up. [ Reply | More ]

not sure it is the same for traditional entry years, but I do think it is that way for non traditional entry years, and I think it makes sense. the repeat is not hard and fast. know a kid where parent wanted to repeat and private school insisted on continuing the grade in in public. agewise parents still think the kid would have been better in the repeat grade. my guess is that school had a kid drop in the non-attrition year and was an easy way to fill the gap. One thing we were told is to realize that there may be siblings trying to transfer over to those schools in off-years too. I would try to schedule visits to each place, attend an open house if you can, and write genuine notes of interest with specific things you like about each school. My impression of the girls schools (and my kids don't go to SS schools) is that they don't want to be viewed as interchangeable. They each feel strongly in their own identities and wouldn't want to be under the impression that you're looking for a girls school, any girls school will do. [ Reply | More ]

Going to be difficult to impossible to get both kids into the same school at the same time at a lot of the schools on your list (B, S, C come to mind in particular). They tend to fill spots on an as-needed basis, based on attrition, and these schools dont have a lot of attrition to begin with. Also when those spots actually open up, a lot of the schools tend to ask around the parent body for recommendations/friends as well.. Have heard of families at other schools getting calls from these schools who invite them to apply because their daughters are in the correct grades of the spots that need filling, and they were recommended by existing parents. If you don't need to have your daughters in an all-girl school, make sure to move to a good zoned Public school area, but also consider applying to other privates as well. There are a lot! It is very tough as it depends entirely on attrition which varies year to year with families moving, getting counseled out, etc. My dd is at a tt ss and there were no new girls in 1st, 1 in second, none in 3rd, 3 in 4th, none in 5th, 5 or so in 6th, 2 in 7th, none in 8th. So your dd will be applying for a tiny number of spots, but there are also fewer applications in off years. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] DC just started 6th grade, and last week received a 60 page admissions brochure from a nearby private high school. I was curious how they received her name (likely her current school?), and was turned off by the whole thing. It was mostly photos of good looking kids, in what is best described as a cross between a Ralph Lauren and college catalog. I feel like kids that age are easily influenced, and considering the magnitude of the investment at 4 years of this school, it was grossly inappropriate. DC is 11. We aren't thinking about this for 3 more years. Am I crazy to find this a big pushy and predatory? The school is not marketing $100 sneakers or videos games. This is easily a $100K+ investment they are pedaling. 24 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

If she just started 6th then you only have two years to think about it, not 3. You have to do the application cycle starting at the beginning of 8th grade. I don't know why you are offending about receiving a brochure. [ Reply | More ]

Ok, you're right. 2 years. But why send it to the kid, not the parents? And why 2 years before application time? There was little substance to the brochure. I was slick marketing. You are completely entitled to make this choice. You know yourself best, and only you can know what the best choice here is for YOU. Any doc or genetic counselor who not only fails to respect this choice, but actually actively tries to sabotage you is bad news— such actions are ignorant and unethical, deeply harmful to you. Find a new doctor, meet to make sure she will respect your decision, and then have records sent . Good luck. Please do not let them undermine you this way. [ Reply | More ]

All genetic test require patient to sign consent. Lab won’t process results unless she signed. So, she gave written consent and she allowed her blood to be drawn. Now you are believing doctors is undermining her. It’s ok to change mind. She should go to the office sign refusal stating she understands risk of her and her loved ones dying with cancer with out prophylactic treatment and will not discuss her results. Those are her results and she gave written permission, now she must give written refusal. [ Reply | More ]

And even if she did consent and then changed her mind, that is her absolute right, and 5hey are prohibited from pressuring her otherwise. She has withdrawn consent verbally , which is sufficient for them to be perfectly clear about her decision. Their responsibility, if they want written withdrawal, is simply to inform her of that and request it, not to refuse to respond or provide needed other treatments, unless she agrees to receive the results. This is appalling behavior, ethically, they are required to be sensitive and responsive to the wishes of THE PATIENT. [ Reply | More ]

ER MD mom here- depends on what kind of procedure you want done. You should absolutely judge musicians, celebrities, anyone, who behaves the way Michael Jackson did. Doing otherwise is only doing a disservice to your child(ren). [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn't have that happen with my kids. "He made good music but it turns out that he was hurting children while he was doing it, so let's find something else." [ Reply | More ]

Is it? Or is it that having your child dress up like a pedo is creepy and weird, and other parents see that, so you feel insecure about your trashiness in being okay with it, so you need to call them snowflakes to try to make yourself feel normal/okay - with having your kids dress up like a child molester. Why not just go with Larry Nassar. Jeffrey Epstein. Maybe Earl Bradly, that pediatrician from DE. [ Reply | More ]

Such a transparent argument style from people with indefensible positions. Unable to refute a position? Toss in the word triggered, then snigger like Beavis and Butthead and adjust your maga hat! [ Reply | More ]

She is trying to resemble Michael Jackson. Blackface would be counterproductive in this case. [ Reply | More ]

Michael Jackson was an awesome talented entertainer with a huge catalogue of amazing songs that my kids and I enjoy. there are disturbing allegations against him (of which he was acquitted in court when he was alive and then further allegations after he died. None of that changes my first sentence. [ Reply | More ]
