I saw a new GYN in June who took blood for genetic testing but I don’t want the results. I need to have a small procedure done and want to schedule it but the doctors office is not cooperating. I’m being told the Dr wants me to come in to discuss the results. I’ve called numerous times times asking to speak with the MD but she won’t return my call and there is no email. Does this seem wrong to you ? I’ve never had an MD I can’t reach by phone. I’m wondering if I should just collect my records and find a new doctor. Wwyd? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

It doesn’t seem like that. I told the receptionist I don’t know any the GT results I just want to schedule the polyp removal. Once the doctor called and left me a message but it just said “Jane told me you wanted me to call you to tell you to come in for your results”. Last week I finally spoke to a different receptionist and explained to her I don’t want GT and just want to know how to proceed for polyp removal. She said “Ohhhh! Dr must have not gotten the correct message before. I’ll make sure she understands and to call you back. “ almost a week now still no call. [ Reply | More ]

If it’s a longer discussion, abnormal result then it should be face to face. What’s wrong with billing for service you provide ? [ Reply | More ]

The doctor suggested it because my mother had post menopause bc and her mother died from either uterine or ovarian ca (my mo isn’t sure which ). But when my mo had her bc she was advised she wasn’t at risk for BRCA because her mother’s two sisters lived well into their 90s with no cancer and they were all smokers too. My grandmothers ca was tied to daily talcum powder use. My mo thank G d no recurrence in almost 20 years. Just lumpectomy and radiation. I DONT WANT TO KNOW if I test positive for some deadly gene. That is not going to help me in any way. Under no circumstances am I subjecting myself to prophylactic surgeries. I think it’s horrific and also I can’t afford to do that anyway even if I wanted to. I work for myself and am Stretched very thin as it is. So no — I don’t need this info. I had been told they would just take the blood but wouldn’t process it until I confirmed the costs/coverage with my insurance. Then next thing I knew they were calling me to come in for GT results. I’m SO PISSED [ Reply | More ]

You are completely entitled to make this choice. You know yourself best, and only you can know what the best choice here is for YOU. Any doc or genetic counselor who not only fails to respect this choice, but actually actively tries to sabotage you is bad news— such actions are ignorant and unethical, deeply harmful to you. Find a new doctor, meet to make sure she will respect your decision, and then have records sent . Good luck. Please do not let them undermine you this way. [ Reply | More ]

All genetic test require patient to sign consent. Lab won’t process results unless she signed. So, she gave written consent and she allowed her blood to be drawn. Now you are believing doctors is undermining her. It’s ok to change mind. She should go to the office sign refusal stating she understands risk of her and her loved ones dying with cancer with out prophylactic treatment and will not discuss her results. Those are her results and she gave written permission, now she must give written refusal. [ Reply | More ]

Not true, this just happened to me —they did it without consent because “ it’s now considered routine” , and am in an enormous legal battle with a top medical center because of it. It happens, and you have to fight it, because consent should be required. [ Reply | More ]

And even if she did consent and then changed her mind, that is her absolute right, and 5hey are prohibited from pressuring her otherwise. She has withdrawn consent verbally , which is sufficient for them to be perfectly clear about her decision. Their responsibility, if they want written withdrawal, is simply to inform her of that and request it, not to refuse to respond or provide needed other treatments, unless she agrees to receive the results. This is appalling behavior, ethically, they are required to be sensitive and responsive to the wishes of THE PATIENT. [ Reply | More ]

It’s about performing genetic testing on me without my prior knowledge or consent. This is a much more serious issue than mere money. Legal and moral— my body, my choice. Never heard of informed consent, doctor? [ Reply | More ]

They started talking about the genetic testing having been done and that they would send a team in to discuss and pursue further, and I hit the roof ( metaphorically speaking) and scared the daylights out of them about what they had done. I have a relevant background in bioethics so was able to cite chapter and verse about their grave violations of patient consent, privacy, etc. [ Reply | More ]

^^^^No family history at all, not one single case in 4 generations (and I have a large extended family) that would have triggered the idea that testing might be appropriate. [ Reply | More ]

ER MD mom here- depends on what kind of procedure you want done. If it involves any anesthesia whatsoever, there is usually a preop meeting with the surgeon where they discuss risk/benefits of surgery with you, type of anesthesia, recovery etc. Have you consent for surgery, get preauthorization done, schedule surgery. It's not a phone conversation. [ Reply | More ]

Thank you for your reply ERMD mom. They are specifically saying it’s for genetic testing results. In fact I actually need a pelvic sonogram as well to determine if the polyp is inside the uterus (as well as in the cervix) and they won’t send me that referral either [ Reply | More ]

You’ve written before. I would type a letter to doctor and have it hand delivered (by male friend). Write BY HAND on outside of envelope. Tell this to doc. Just explain. And say if she can’t see you for polyp removal you will need to request records to give to another healthcare provider. Close with, I’m hoping this situation can be resolved and look forward to a call from your office to schedule my requested appointment for polyp removal [ Reply | More ]

I’m sorry you went through this. It’s terrifying to imagine. How are you doing now? It’s not like I’m refusing results of a biopsy. It’s about making some prediction. The benefits of prophylactic surgery are somewhat if not rather limited. I’ll cross that bridge if I have to. But to KNOW and not be able to do anything about it any way how would that help ? I have no money and no rich parent to go to and can’t afford to miss work unless I have no choice. [ Reply | More ]
