[ - ] 4 1/2 yo DS is starting to mouth off a lot, test boundaries, etc and he's been going out of the house and then going to where I can't see him. He IS allowed out of the house provided I know he's gone out AND he stays on the patio where I can see him at all times. Today, he purposely wondered around to the front of the house and so I told him that he couldn't do that because sometimes people come and take little children away and if that happens, he will never see anyone he knows again and he can never come home again. He started to cry and said that made him sad. I don't want him to have a fear of the world and that's not why I nec. don't want him to wander exactly, but it worked it seemed. Was I wrong? 13 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I don't know, really. There were plenty of times I stepped out of my yard. BUT, things were safer then. I don't totally disagree with you, but I don't think you can trust a 4yo not to step out into the street if they are alone. [ Reply | More ]

depends on her setup i guess. i was imaginign a backyard patio where you could easily tell a kid "don't leave this patio." if the patio wasn't high or dangerous i'd def let 4yo out there alone in my sight. but a 4yo who walks around the house definitely didn't get the message about there being big time punishment for leaving mom's sight [ Reply | More ]

The DOE introduced a new procedure for applying to universal Pre-K this year. You need to find out if there's a universal preK in your area. And even if there is, you need to identify private options, since there are so few public preK seats. [ Reply | More ]

DH went to private catholic schools all his life and was a poor student. I noticed that he coulsd remember facts from a documentary but not from reading something and encouraged him to get tested for college. He does have a LD as it turns out and it was missed all those years. It happens. Don't know of any books but Winston Churchill failed a grade and Einstein didn't talk til he was about 5. Einstein was speech delayed (and not until FIVE!!! that is not true) because he grew up in a household where 3-4 languages were spoken. He did not have a learning disability. ITA. On the bright side she's actually done well enough with an unidentified ld to get into college. Many colleges have support service departments which can offer accomodations. While "A Special Education," by Dana Buchman, is written from the parent's perspective, it's a great book because she is a huge proponent of the idea that these are learning *differences* and that people with LDs have a unique vision to share, that it's not strictly a downside. You might take a look at it and see if parts of it might be for her - the afterword is written by Dana Buchman's daughter who is now at college. [ Reply | More ]

I am reading a great book about an LD and an ADHD kid who transfer to Brown and figure out how to be successful there and pass it on. My son is 8 and was diagnosed with LD and ADHD and I'm in graduate school and realize I too have a functional LD that I have been hiding from everyone for my whole life. My brother was diagnosed with dyslexia and I hid under the radar with highly skewed and variable performance. The book is Learning Outside the Lines by Jonathan Mooney and David Cole. I flunked out of college and was academically withdrawn and I went back after working for a year and I graduated two years later. I don't generally tell people that. [ Reply | More ]
