4 1/2 yo DS is starting to mouth off a lot, test boundaries, etc and he's been going out of the house and then going to where I can't see him. He IS allowed out of the house provided I know he's gone out AND he stays on the patio where I can see him at all times. Today, he purposely wondered around to the front of the house and so I told him that he couldn't do that because sometimes people come and take little children away and if that happens, he will never see anyone he knows again and he can never come home again. He started to cry and said that made him sad. I don't want him to have a fear of the world and that's not why I nec. don't want him to wander exactly, but it worked it seemed. Was I wrong? 'mouth off' a lot? that's because training starts at birth and you seem to have missed a few steps. it is developmentally appropraite to test boundaries. yeah, you're wrong. [ Reply | More ]

OP: What am I missing here? My 4 yo is the only one who ever pushes? In most aspects it's easy to deal with as it happens but in this case, I was tired and maybe I shouldn't have said it, but it made him stop and think [ Reply | More ]

I've done it. But, you're wrong for letting him go out alone. 4.6yos are impulsive. you can't guarantee he'll stay on the patio just b/c you want him to. [ Reply | More ]

actually...she can guarantee that. our mothers did it. she sounds like a cowardly parent imo. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know, really. There were plenty of times I stepped out of my yard. BUT, things were safer then. I don't totally disagree with you, but I don't think you can trust a 4yo not to step out into the street if they are alone. [ Reply | More ]

depends on her setup i guess. i was imaginign a backyard patio where you could easily tell a kid "don't leave this patio." if the patio wasn't high or dangerous i'd def let 4yo out there alone in my sight. but a 4yo who walks around the house definitely didn't get the message about there being big time punishment for leaving mom's sight [ Reply | More ]

it's your responsibility to train him without fears - and you could even do this without words. my suggestion is to read , 'children, the challenge' by rudolf drikurs. try to get a copy today [ Reply | More ]

"trainign without fears" is bullshit. he should be afraid of disobeying his mother. she shouldn't have to coerce him into thinking he'll be kidnapped [ Reply | More ]

i'm scratching my head. what happened to "you step out of my sight for a minute and that's it for you, buddy." the scare tactics on your part just seem immature, like you have to convince him there's a boogie monster when his fear should be of punishment for disobeying you, not of some kidnapper [ Reply | More ]
