niece who just finished her freshman yr at college, couldn't get above a D. The college told her to get tested for LD. How did the school district she came from, a very good one btw, not pick up on this. Feel so bad for her. She is really down. Anyone know of any books she could read that would tell her it's okay to have a learning disability, that she can still succeed? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

DH went to private catholic schools all his life and was a poor student. I noticed that he coulsd remember facts from a documentary but not from reading something and encouraged him to get tested for college. He does have a LD as it turns out and it was missed all those years. It happens. Don't know of any books but Winston Churchill failed a grade and Einstein didn't talk til he was about 5. LD are common and many many people with them are very intelligent. Remind her of that [ Reply | More ]

Einstein was speech delayed (and not until FIVE!!! that is not true) because he grew up in a household where 3-4 languages were spoken. He did not have a learning disability. That said, there are TONS of successful people w/ LDs! Not everyone has the same skill set, and thank God for that! There are millions of things she can excel at, too many to name. [ Reply | More ]

ITA. On the bright side she's actually done well enough with an unidentified ld to get into college. Many colleges have support service departments which can offer accomodations. She may find, that once she identifies what is going on and gets support that she will find things much easier than they have ever been for her. It could be a great thing that they've helped her to id this. [ Reply | More ]

this was me. i was not dx till i was a sophmore in undergrad. Got ADHD diagnosis and in one sememster went from a C avg to a A- avg. now in a fairly successful job in marketing with an MBA. If they are suspecting ADHD, try Driven to Distraction. GL. I am not on a lot, but will watch this post if you have any questions. [ Reply | More ]

While "A Special Education," by Dana Buchman, is written from the parent's perspective, it's a great book because she is a huge proponent of the idea that these are learning *differences* and that people with LDs have a unique vision to share, that it's not strictly a downside. You might take a look at it and see if parts of it might be for her - the afterword is written by Dana Buchman's daughter who is now at college. [ Reply | More ]

It could also be that she was merely well supported and comfortable while at home and in school and then felt lost and scared and anxious when away. Or she was sowing her wild oats, skipping classes and is falling onto the LD wagon instead of taking responsibility for her actions. [ Reply | More ]

i thought this too, but now i'm putting pieces together and it makes sense. plus she has me as a friend on facebook and i see how she talks with her friends, she is not typical gone crazy college kid, she's very responsible. [ Reply | More ]

possible adhd. It shows up differently in girls than in boys and is often overlooked. I have a friend who was not diagnosed until college and her grades and self esteem increased so much after she was diagnosed and treated [ Reply | More ]

I am reading a great book about an LD and an ADHD kid who transfer to Brown and figure out how to be successful there and pass it on. My son is 8 and was diagnosed with LD and ADHD and I'm in graduate school and realize I too have a functional LD that I have been hiding from everyone for my whole life. My brother was diagnosed with dyslexia and I hid under the radar with highly skewed and variable performance. The book is Learning Outside the Lines by Jonathan Mooney and David Cole. I flunked out of college and was academically withdrawn and I went back after working for a year and I graduated two years later. I don't generally tell people that. [ Reply | More ]
