Apparently, if the machines aren't properly cleaned, you can get listeria. I guess there was some study in Australia and it's a big no no there. As a PhD chemist, I'd love to know specifically which chemicals in Tasti D-lite are so offensive. I acknowledge that it isn't great for you and an all natural diet would be preferable, but the main ingredients are water, milk, sugar and corn syrup and as poster below says, there really isn't such a thing as soft serve ice cream. Soft serve by definition isn't ice cream. [ Reply | More ]

Hmm, if you can barely stand your own dh, then you are are probably right an au pair would not be right for you. I love having them. They are young women, mainly like I was at their age, I only take them 21 to 25 looking to enjoy a year or two abroad and become part of the family. They treat my children like their own. We usually have a wonderful experience. After a couple of weeks, sometimes by the end of the 1st week, they are no stranger. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, I have used both. Local people make all the difference and the local people, if David and Donna (can I do that on here?) with CCAP are a bit better with then the one I had with APIA. In the end they are both about the same. I was with APIA as they had a wonderful local person on the UWS but she left and their new person is awful. So I went to CCAP and David and Donna seem great. Not sure what Brooklyn support is like. [ Reply | More ]

I was with APIA for two years and had a horrible experience the second year. Their local people do nothing but take a paycheck and the agency in connecticut is not a source if you are having a problem (despite the hefty fee they charge). You'd think that going through an agency would provide some assistance in the childcare/parent relationship but it would be less frustrating and less expensive to go through craigslist. We ranked 166 over 9 this year because we have a boy. Our concern is that with one class if the classes are not gender balanced there could be 5 boys in the class for 6 years. If 166 has two classes then at least there would be 10 boys across two classes for six years so more friends [ Reply | More ]

The teachers are great, dc gets a lot of personalized attention, the families are nice and there is a great community feel. we like the location and feel the building is well maintained, bright and orderly. the kids feel part of the place. There are lots of extras for a public schooland the pta raises a lot of money to keep things going. also, a good afterschool program. plus, if you decide to try again for anderson and get it, it won't be as big a deal switching down the road. ps87 felt unweildy to us and a bit chaotic. i SOMEWHAT LIKE THE IDEA OF A BIGGER GRADE, BUT 7 k CLASSES SEEMS LIKE TOO MUCH, AND i IMAGINE CUTS DOWN ON THE COMMUNITY FEEL. AT PS9, EVERYONE SEEMS TO KNOW MY DC, AND ME, FROM THE SECURITY GUARD TO THE PRINCIPAL. i JUST THINK A SMART KID HAS A BETTER CHANCE OF BEING CHALLENGED THERE. [ Reply | More ]

PS87 is a wonderful school with an amazing community. There is not the divisiveness you see at PS9. It is one school - you don't have the gen ed kids applying out every year to G&T and the G&T kids applying out every year to Anderson. [ Reply | More ]

ps9 has a great community, and your comments only reflect your ignorance about how the school works in practice. people feel part of the community and the school has the advantage of allowing a gifted dc to be with similar peers, which has value for some kids. others may do better with a mixed environment, but ours wouldn't [ Reply | More ]

aw, anderson mom. i would recognize from anywhere. people are extremely happy at ps9, but it makes absolute sense for gen ed kids to try for G&T when appropriate, or G&T kids to try for anderson and avoid the MS angst. people can be happy, and still look to add to their situation. for some it is a more rigorous program and peer group (gen ed to G&T) and for others it is a longer run at the school which everyone seems to love, both ps9 and anderson. (which were once together as one school for years). hardly affects the community feel of the school though. it is a real community with people who work hard to make a great environment for the dcs. that is fact. anderson has categorically rejected ps9 kids applying in the recent past when the onsite was allowed and the school was new. I think they wanted to distinguish themselves as a new school, and wanted distance from ps9. now without the onsite, I expect that will happen less, since ps9 kids are the highest scoring in the district [ Reply | More ]
