I've never wanted to hire a sitter. My two older kids went to daycare (I work PT) but now we've moved and the daycare is too far from our house/kids' school. So, sitter seems to be only option for #3. Oh, god, I dread managing that relationship. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Outside of NYC, I'd think dealing with nannies is a lot easier [ Reply | More ]

For many it is not but I have a problem hiring people to be in my home, my space and telling them what to do. It's a main reason why I chose daycare for my older two. [ Reply | More ]

I don't need therapy. I just grew up pretty working class and I am used to working for what I have and doing for myself. I'm not comfortable hiring someone one-to-one and having them in my home. Same thing for a cleaning lady. I am just not comfortable doing it. My mom was a cleaning lady so I am certainly glad someone hired her...but therapy? No, I've got plenty of other things to do, thanks. [ Reply | More ]

gotcha. I wouldn't want someone in my home, either. [ Reply | More ]

I posted below and I felt the same way. I'm still not good at telling her what to do, which is why it's important to get a really good one who won't slack and whose opinions you trust. Good luck! [ Reply | More ]

I am with you. Four kids, always hated having someone in my house. Now #4 is in daycare PT - love it. What about in-home daycare? [ Reply | More ]

Have you thought of an au pair? They live with you, if you can bear it, in some respects it is an easier relationship to manage [ Reply | More ]

I barely want my dh in my house, let alone a stranger! I have a live-out and I like it when she leaves and I can chill at my own house. [ Reply | More ]

Hmm, if you can barely stand your own dh, then you are are probably right an au pair would not be right for you. I love having them. They are young women, mainly like I was at their age, I only take them 21 to 25 looking to enjoy a year or two abroad and become part of the family. They treat my children like their own. We usually have a wonderful experience. After a couple of weeks, sometimes by the end of the 1st week, they are no stranger. [ Reply | More ]

They treat your children like their own then leave after a year and you get another one? How can this be good for dcs? [ Reply | More ]

I don't think I could handle someone under my roof all the time - but I do know what you mean in that the au pair is younger and therefore a bit more 'manageable'. What do you think of a newborn w/ a 20yo? I mean, when I return to work #3 will be 5mos - not exactly a newborn I guess. Older two will be in school/camp. [ Reply | More ]

ITA they are not allowed to be alone with a new born, children must be at least 6 months old. I had one when my youngest was 6 months old [ Reply | More ]

There are two agencies in this area either APIA (Au Pair in America) or Cultural Care Au Pair, depending on where you live one is definitely better than the other. If you are in NYC Cultural Care is the way to go. [ Reply | More ]

Brooklyn. Thanks again. Have you used them personally? [ Reply | More ]

Yes, I have used both. Local people make all the difference and the local people, if David and Donna (can I do that on here?) with CCAP are a bit better with then the one I had with APIA. In the end they are both about the same. I was with APIA as they had a wonderful local person on the UWS but she left and their new person is awful. So I went to CCAP and David and Donna seem great. Not sure what Brooklyn support is like. [ Reply | More ]

I was with APIA for two years and had a horrible experience the second year. Their local people do nothing but take a paycheck and the agency in connecticut is not a source if you are having a problem (despite the hefty fee they charge). You'd think that going through an agency would provide some assistance in the childcare/parent relationship but it would be less frustrating and less expensive to go through craigslist. I felt the same way when we had #2 and had to hire an nanny instead of daycare. In many ways, it does suck. But if you get a good one, the convenience factor is really nice. [ Reply | More ]
