very good. the sibs won't take all the spots. [ Reply | More ]

but there are only 25 spots this year. I'd say it is going to be slim and are you really sure you want your dc to be with the same 25 kids for the next 6 years? [ Reply | More ]

That's my biggest concern. For middle school or high school, I would definitely say no. For elementary - could be great or could be bad if not a good mix of kids. Sigh [ Reply | More ]

Are you only going for PS9 or Anderson as well? The problem is they cannot gender balance so who knows what the demographic of either of these schools will be like next year. It would suck if there was 3 boys and 22 girls in the class. [ Reply | More ]

Going for both - basically either of those or PS87. I know many would love to be in my position, but very tough decision~! [ Reply | More ]

I'm in your position too. Exactly. But I also put PS166 G&T. Are you zoned for 87? [ Reply | More ]

Yes - I didn't even put 166 since I knew I wouldn't choose it over 87. If we get A - no question. If we get 9 - I will be VERY torn. You? [ Reply | More ]

may I ask why you would pick 87 over 166 (and maybe over 9) I am in the same situation and think I would pick 166 for peer group--but would love your perspective [ Reply | More ]

TWO THINGS - 1. these kids will not be stuck with the same kids for 6 years, people move away, etc. 2. getting 99% on anything is not a guarantee in the NYC public school system - my daughter scored 99% on SB 6 years ago and was on waiting lists until 3rd Gr when thru a variance she finally got a spot at LL. We have a girl - why the difference if a boy? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 05.27.08, 01:02 PM Flag

We ranked 166 over 9 this year because we have a boy. Our concern is that with one class if the classes are not gender balanced there could be 5 boys in the class for 6 years. If 166 has two classes then at least there would be 10 boys across two classes for six years so more friends [ Reply | More ]

The teachers are great, dc gets a lot of personalized attention, the families are nice and there is a great community feel. we like the location and feel the building is well maintained, bright and orderly. the kids feel part of the place. There are lots of extras for a public schooland the pta raises a lot of money to keep things going. also, a good afterschool program. plus, if you decide to try again for anderson and get it, it won't be as big a deal switching down the road. ps87 felt unweildy to us and a bit chaotic. i SOMEWHAT LIKE THE IDEA OF A BIGGER GRADE, BUT 7 k CLASSES SEEMS LIKE TOO MUCH, AND i IMAGINE CUTS DOWN ON THE COMMUNITY FEEL. AT PS9, EVERYONE SEEMS TO KNOW MY DC, AND ME, FROM THE SECURITY GUARD TO THE PRINCIPAL. i JUST THINK A SMART KID HAS A BETTER CHANCE OF BEING CHALLENGED THERE. [ Reply | More ]

This is what I like to hear. I am worried about the 1 class aspect, but I think in elementary school, that could be a good thing - as long as it isn't all boys! [ Reply | More ]

PS87 is a wonderful school with an amazing community. There is not the divisiveness you see at PS9. It is one school - you don't have the gen ed kids applying out every year to G&T and the G&T kids applying out every year to Anderson. [ Reply | More ]

ps9 has a great community, and your comments only reflect your ignorance about how the school works in practice. people feel part of the community and the school has the advantage of allowing a gifted dc to be with similar peers, which has value for some kids. others may do better with a mixed environment, but ours wouldn't [ Reply | More ]

no, they are not. my dc has lunch and recess with G&T kids and gen ed kids. they are mixed up a bit. also has afterschool with kids from all programs, including anderson. people are happy, and frankly its hard to imagine that people are sitting around getting upset about any imagined tension. aw, anderson mom. i would recognize from anywhere. people are extremely happy at ps9, but it makes absolute sense for gen ed kids to try for G&T when appropriate, or G&T kids to try for anderson and avoid the MS angst. people can be happy, and still look to add to their situation. for some it is a more rigorous program and peer group (gen ed to G&T) and for others it is a longer run at the school which everyone seems to love, both ps9 and anderson. (which were once together as one school for years). hardly affects the community feel of the school though. it is a real community with people who work hard to make a great environment for the dcs. that is fact. anderson has categorically rejected ps9 kids applying in the recent past when the onsite was allowed and the school was new. I think they wanted to distinguish themselves as a new school, and wanted distance from ps9. now without the onsite, I expect that will happen less, since ps9 kids are the highest scoring in the district [ Reply | More ]

well, now anderson won't have a say, so I guess all the top 99s they would have rejected before in favor of their "diversity" as a citywide will have a chance. good for them. anderson sucks. [ Reply | More ]

^^^also, you make it sound like these kids are not really all that and that their parents haven't accepted it. do you agree that anderson wants to be seen as a separate school from ps9, and so is rejecting these kids for reasons related to this [ Reply | More ]

I'm responding to the poster who said some kids should get in now w/the new system - I think that if some get in the situation would seem less grim. I don't think there is anything wrong with the kids. [ Reply | More ]

There is nothing grim about the situation, there are hardly any spots though so odds were never good. A couple of PS9 kids will definitely get in since they have sibs at A and got the scores. [ Reply | More ]

Why would you say that PS 9 kids are "the highest scoring" in the district? On what test(s)? If it's OLSAT, then you're only talking about the K class. If it's the ELA/math, then PS 9 is not necessarily the highest scoring in D3, esp if you count 4s. [ Reply | More ]

I am talking olsat and before that the erb/sb...whatever was used for admissions. I think this is likely true since dropping of sib/catchment preference and the school became widely popular--the most popular- in D3 [ Reply | More ]
