No worries. My DD has a January b-day, too. She loved (and loves) being read to, but no interest in independent reading. She made progress in school and is now in the top reading group, but at home she is completely uninterested in reading independently (now in 1st grade). Academically, she's fine, so I let her be. School is HARD and takes the joy out of things. [ Reply | More ]

Mine was 6 entering K and learned this year. He still needs lots of practice but has essentially learned it. He's very bright but doesn't love letters/reading. He does love numbers/math though. I know I'm going to have to push him with reading as he grows. He's on summer break now and I'm going to sit and have him read/practice a few times a week to keep it up. [ Reply | More ]

DD is at a so called top tier private school in nyc and they feel that almost all kids will know how to read by second grade. Even at that, the kids don't all read the same book until 4th grade. My dd started to read in first grade but has become an avid reader in second grade. It is one of her favorite things. It will come. Don't push it. [ Reply | More ]

There was one girl who kept touching dh on the waist and it pissed me off. She was doing it to everybody though. I told dh it's inappropriate for her to do that etc, don't associate with her anymore. He assured me it was all her, he would let her know. Well I get home and I am on the phone with him, coincidentally I am browsing some pics online and come across one of him with his arms wrapped all the way around her while he is on the other end telling me I have nothing to worry about. BS. I told him I was done, sick of it, wouldn't put up with it. Would this upset you? They all go out drinking together 24/7. 6 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

When DH & I went away, we left some paperwork with MIL authorizing her to make decisions. It was part of the Quicken Lawyer package -- great software and cheap at nolo.org. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Your sil's mother has passed away. Do you send a floral arrangement? Just a card? There was no service - she died in Florida. I'm close with SIL but I'm asking because dh is UE and I re think every expenditure. 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

A card with personal sentiments will do. Funeral flowers are so expensive, and they're so temporary. [ Reply | More ]

I would send food to the house during shiva or after the wake. Maybe a mass card, if catholic. Not just flowers if you are close. [ Reply | More ]

If that is the case, then write her a heartfelt note. She can open and read it if she feels up to it--so it's not intrusive and it's a tough thing to do and she will understand and appreciate that. [ Reply | More ]

My mom recently passed away. The most thoughtful things were handwritten cards from friends/family - I was shocked how few of my friends did this. Tell them a few small things you remember and that they are in your prayers. Send it soon, not in two months. Best. BY THE WAY, I was really saddened that my sisterinlaw did NOT attend my moms funeral bc she wasnt sure what to do with ehr toddler..if there is any kind of service, family should be there. OP: Thanks all. i'm going to write a note with a card. Losing my mother was one of the worst things that ever happenned to me so I agree, some love is better than 1 800 flowers. [ Reply | More ]
