any jewish moms on? I am not religious anymore because I see judaism as my culture and really have no interest in making my children go to temple but want to raise them to be proud of being jewish, proud of their culture, instead of a bat-mitzvah, taking them to Israel or even to see some of the camps to teach them about the past history. Are there any teachings, or books that focus more on this side of judaism and less on the religous? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Not that much in the US. But I find that this is the attitude of many secular Israeli's. [ Reply | More ]

IT's easy to be that way when you are an Israeli citizen: jewish state. Default mode is jew. Here, it is a christian country. Remember banks and post offices etc close for Christmas day. Much different situation, cannot compare, imo need to do the whole shebang to have the J identity. I think you should do the bat mitzvah, but instead, do it at the wailing wall in israel, jsut you and y our family. Who says this stuff has to be some tacky party? make it y ours. [ Reply | More ]

op: there are humanistic synogogues that teach hebrew and kids grow up learning about judaism in a less relgious way but can read hebrew and know the history of the jews, there's nothing wrong with that. [ Reply | More ]

that's not the problem--it's trying to knoe what is know already--simply because my parents decided in the 70's that reconstructionist ideas work--but thet had the luxery of being raised w/all of the traditions--don't underestimate longterm insecurity--nor that they will not be mad later at your apathy about g-d... I relate to your response. Crappy 1970s reform education. Very little practiced in the home. Spend entire service trying to find my place. Hebrew is weak. Married a conservative woman with a strong background. Want my 3 ds's to go to a day school at least through middle school so they don't have to struggle with it like I do. [ Reply | More ]
