DS was 5 in January. He's going into K (but is one of the oldest in the class). Should he be reading by now? He's beyond not interested... [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

No worries. My DD has a January b-day, too. She loved (and loves) being read to, but no interest in independent reading. She made progress in school and is now in the top reading group, but at home she is completely uninterested in reading independently (now in 1st grade). Academically, she's fine, so I let her be. School is HARD and takes the joy out of things. [ Reply | More ]

I remember learning to read in K. I really don't think it's a great idea to push that sort of thing. Does he like being read to? [ Reply | More ]

totally depends on your dc. My ds went to kgn not having any interest in reading and I didn't push it. (some of his friends were already reading). teacher said not to worry and he'll do it when ready. he is now (he still struggles a little bit) but is doing much better [ Reply | More ]

I was you one year ago. DS was in K and getting help outside the classroom. Today he's finishing first grade and reading above grade level. He feels so good about himself too. He just was not ready last year. I'm sure you're in the same situation gl! [ Reply | More ]

They aren't really expected to read until 3rd grade. They make you feel like your kid is "behind" if he [ Reply | More ]

^^^ if he's not decoding well by the end of kindergarten, but this is BS. They call third grade the "great equalizer," by which they mean that by then most all of them can read. Don't buy into the pushy BS schools put on children. [ Reply | More ]

Mine was 6 entering K and learned this year. He still needs lots of practice but has essentially learned it. He's very bright but doesn't love letters/reading. He does love numbers/math though. I know I'm going to have to push him with reading as he grows. He's on summer break now and I'm going to sit and have him read/practice a few times a week to keep it up. [ Reply | More ]

DD is at a so called top tier private school in nyc and they feel that almost all kids will know how to read by second grade. Even at that, the kids don't all read the same book until 4th grade. My dd started to read in first grade but has become an avid reader in second grade. It is one of her favorite things. It will come. Don't push it. [ Reply | More ]
