[ - ] When did your child transition to one nap? Our 10 mo. old is fighting his morning nap like crazy. Moved it to 11 am and he goes down with less crying but seems tired before that. 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

you must be doing it wrong. try this. put db to bed. go back in, every 5 minutes, talk, soothe, pat, but dont pick up. first night it will be an hour plus, by fourth night should go to bed on own. if he wakes a night, do you feed? either way, do same thing for night wakings, every five mins go in. this worked great for us. I'll go in if he's been hysterical for a long time, but for the most part we're doing more of the Weissbluth technique than Ferber. It gets better (started at 2 hours and got down to 12 minutes) but then the next night it's back to 45 min then back to 2 hours! [ Reply | More ]

NP: You don't know anything. OP, go with what works. If he gets more hysterical when you go in or if it keeps him more awake, then it's cold turkey. Otherwise, a graduated method (aka Ferber) is a little more sane. Also, although Weissbluth doesn't talk about it, teething messes with sleeping until about 18 months. There will be good and bad nights. The main thing is to be consistent with sleep time rituals and timing. Other than that, cold turkey, Ferber, sit in the room until he's asleep -- it's all good. They aren't separate things, nimrod. First of all, a well-rested baby is a happy baby. Second, constantly going in "to reassure the baby" is really about you, not the baby. Third, a well-rested parent is a better parent. Sleep-deprived martyrs aren't exactly the best caretakers. [ Reply | More ]

you have to be kidding... moving on. I've read about him online, on ub and spoken to other parents about the book. No, I have not read the actual book but that isn't necessary. I know about Ferber and know it's not for me without reading the actual book. I also know about Happiest Baby on the Block by watching a 10min video and not reading the book. Clearly, we just disagree but that doesn't mean I don't know about the methods. [ Reply | More ]

OP here: I think 10 months is actually on the older side for this kind of training. The earlier you do it, the easier it is for the baby to get into the habit of falling asleep on his or her own. This is the best thing for my child. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I am a Weissbluth fan, but I don't think it should be followed doctrinaire if it isn't working. Ferber's method is to soothe at gradually longer intervals: 5 minutes, then 10, then 15. This give the baby time to learn to self-soothe without going into panic mode. I strongly feel the sleep-time routines and schedule are most important. Good luck to you. [ Reply | More ]

Try a book called "The Sleepeasy Solution: The Exhausted Parent's Guide to Getting Your Child to Sleep from Birth to Age 5". It's a more 'humane' way of training your baby to go to sleep on his/her own. Try to follow it exactly, if you can, for best results. It has worked well for many moms I've talked to. Good luck.
