[ - ] Path to making 2nd round at Hunter: kids who separate easily, participate in group activities w/o taking over or disrupting others, take instructions well and respect authority, show curiosity, well socialized at the playdate (3 hrs). Birthday has nothing to do with it. There are fall and winter kids who make it. 15 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I want to add kids that think creatively. My ds has tested as PG, but is a very concrete (not creative) thinker. Many of the "tasks" they had the kids do at the onsite involved thinking creatively to solve problems or make up stories. He can do all that you mention above though. [ Reply | More ]

Well, I can tell you that my friend's son cried hysterically going into the Hunter playdate and he got in. My DD did not cry at all and is definitely a creative thinker who plays well with others, takes direction and doesn't dominate and she didn't get in. There are more factors involved and they have a limited amount of space. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think you have any idea what you're talking about. DD does all of those things and got into 3 TT private schools and was dinged from Hunter; her preschool classmate who doesn't fit into your description at all but is very creative and mentally high-powered got into Hunter and was rejected from all the privates to which she applied. Some of it is luck. Kids break into groups and work together during part 2. If your child gets paired with good kids, it gives them a boost up, if not they are at a handicap. [ Reply | More ]

DS was WL'ed. He was reading at 3.5 and was doing 35 piece puzzles at around 2. At Round 2 playdate he told me he put together a puzzle that 1 of the 'teachers' said was the hardest one and no one ever gets. Who knows if this why he made it past Round 2. We'll never know. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I have been so challenged and down, I don't think I have a lot to fight anymore. I am a 28 year old fulltime nursing student without family in the United States. I moved here because of my husband. He is emotionally and physically abusive. I want out of the marriage but he is determined to take the children away from me. Based on the law and his assets, I think he has a stronger say. I am trying to find a full time job doing anything, to boost my income. Does anyone here know of low cost legal advice? Any suggestions or general advice is also appreciated. Thanks. 12 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I don't, but I'm sure someone here can point you in the right direction. One thing I do know is, unless you have substance-abuse problems or plan to take the children out of the country, the courts will usually always side with the mother in custody issues, regardless of dh's assets. You do have options. If you are in NYC, call 311 to get connected to shelters for abused women. The staff at those shelters can connect you to legal services for free (the lawyers are volunteers). There is no presumption that the income-earning parent will automatically get custody, but there is a presumption that an abusive parent will not. Good luck! [ Reply | More ]

Mozart - music is highly correlated with math, so yes. Newton was a brilliant mathematician. Jefferson - I don't know much about him other than that he was a strong leader and an inventor (which prob'ly means he was creative). [ Reply | More ]

So review and analysis of anything not inherently logical, such as math, doesn't take intelligence? The historians trying to explain why certain events took place in the way they did aren't smart people? neither are medical doctors (which is as much an art as it is a science)? Being able to read, absorb and analyze words is just as complicated as being able to analyze numbers, if not more so. There are different kinds of intelligence, simply because you can look at a balance sheet and tell if a company is a good investment risk doesn't mean that you can actually go in and run that company - two totally different kinds of intelligence. Analysis is intelligence. BTW, I would not count accounting (it's really just simple math of addition and substraction) as high math. Linear Algebra and high level calculus and physics are. Once you learn to read, you don't analyze each word anymore to read. [ Reply | More ]

but you specifically excluded subjects that require "lots of reading", meaning subjects such as history. you didn't seem to consider that at truly advanced levels, almost anything, even a word-based subject like history, takes serious intelligence to understand it. the basics always look simple. The causes of the American Civil war can be summed up by a 4th grader in 3 sentences, but historians are going to be arguing over the subtleties of States Rights for the next hundred years. I don't know about historians. One can gather facts and do analysis but it's more subjective. Sure, physicists argue, too, but one's IQ doesn't have to be much higher to be a history professor than a physics professor at a given university. I do think high level philosophers are smart, bec philosophy is logic. [ Reply | More ]

It's really not a big deal - try leaving right after dinner and driving while DC sleeps in the car, that worked best for us when she was that age. Portable DVD player also works well. if the school will let you. Many schools don't let parents get involved other than giving $. Plus, DOE has strict rules the parents & the school admin can't fight. Plus, it takes more than 1 or 2 parents to improve the school. Esp'ly schools with kids who come from really challenging backgrounds. Educating and learning is not only about drills and such - there are emotional needs of kids and physical health that many kids in some schools can't meet. School is only a part of the equation. It's not as simple as you claim. [ Reply | More ]

VOTE. Complain. Get involved in less direct ways, like on the local community board or the PTA. The DOE isn't some monolithic entity that simply exists. It's an agency of the government, and the government is run by We the People. [ Reply | More ]

I know, I know, but you see it takes a GROUP of parents to make a movement. Some schools have PTAs where only 2 people attend. While you wait for the system to change, years go by and your kid pays for it. BTDT and it's not like you can come in and take over the school and change everything. There are more things you can't change than you can. Plus what you want is not nec'ly what other parents want. You are naive if voting, complaining and getting involved in PTA will turn the school around while your dc is there (in the span of 5 yrs). [ Reply | More ]

LOL, manicure? Puleeese. I started volunteering for the school while my dc was only a baby, went through DOE training (for parents), tutored kids every week, raised $ and participated in school events, got to know teachers and administration and parents/legal guardians of many students. While what you suggest could work at some schools, many other schools, there are obstacles even the well organized parents can't overcome (assuming there is a group of organized parents which isn't the case).
