Path to making 2nd round at Hunter: kids who separate easily, participate in group activities w/o taking over or disrupting others, take instructions well and respect authority, show curiosity, well socialized at the playdate (3 hrs). Birthday has nothing to do with it. There are fall and winter kids who make it. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I want to add kids that think creatively. My ds has tested as PG, but is a very concrete (not creative) thinker. Many of the "tasks" they had the kids do at the onsite involved thinking creatively to solve problems or make up stories. He can do all that you mention above though. [ Reply | More

please show me how you get to that number? gut feeling? do you know all the kids that are accepted to Hunter? Do you know the kids that got into round 2? No? I thought so. There is no exact science to Hunter admissions. [ Reply | More

Well, I can tell you that my friend's son cried hysterically going into the Hunter playdate and he got in. My DD did not cry at all and is definitely a creative thinker who plays well with others, takes direction and doesn't dominate and she didn't get in. There are more factors involved and they have a limited amount of space. [ Reply | More

I don't think you have any idea what you're talking about. DD does all of those things and got into 3 TT private schools and was dinged from Hunter; her preschool classmate who doesn't fit into your description at all but is very creative and mentally high-powered got into Hunter and was rejected from all the privates to which she applied. Yeah - not sure this is it. DS has these qualities and fared great in private school process but did not get into Hunter. DC very creative thinker and social and tests extremely well. I thought maybe they pegged him as smart and verbal as opposed to really "gifted." [ Reply | More

Some of it is luck. Kids break into groups and work together during part 2. If your child gets paired with good kids, it gives them a boost up, if not they are at a handicap. [ Reply | More

DS was WL'ed. He was reading at 3.5 and was doing 35 piece puzzles at around 2. At Round 2 playdate he told me he put together a puzzle that 1 of the 'teachers' said was the hardest one and no one ever gets. Who knows if this why he made it past Round 2. We'll never know. [ Reply | More
