lol, this morning, which is actually pretty unusual. Free awesome river rafting trip (probably only class I or II rapids) for community members to do a retreat/ community planning work, planning a youth/community center for the area I live in- very cool networking and recreational trip. DH and I both selected to go (weird small community and we both have kind of public jobs). If we don't go the community center might not serve our needs/be lame, and we'd miss out on important networking (all about who you know for jobs around here). The trip is fully paid and in a part of E Oregon that is very cool (we live on the NW coast of OR). But I only have 3 weeks of leave saved up even though I "get" to take 3 months off from work by law for maternity leave (as in, I will be taking 3 months off but all but 3 weeks will be unpaid). So $ will be tight. DH has one week more of leave saved up than I do. If I go on the trip my boss will not count it as work even though it would be work related, but I might switch jobs before then anyways. So DH says he is going, I tell him I'm not. Then I think about it and freak out because the situation implies I will be responsible for everything and be the one making all the sacrifices and this is db #1, basically freaking out. Eventually decided to both go on the trip and just live off the credit card a bit longer than we would have without going since it will be less paid leave for me later (but with such a tiny amount of leave, does it even matter?). Basically, worried about role changes, not being part of the community after db, and if I get the new job, needing to take leave and the extra week off (doesn't that kind of mess up salary negotiations if they know you need other things, like time off, is that how women end up earning 80% on the dollar, etc?) They aren't "allowed" to discriminate on hiring if you're pg, but I am way to cynical to think that doesn't happen. Then there is the taking off a week thing.... is that financially irresponsible or just allowing for a week of fun before baby arrives? And the USA sucks when it comes to maternity leave, why can't we just have it paid so ppl like me don't have to have a breakdown over it? We have both also been working really hard rennovating our house because we can rent out our basement for about 1/3 of our house payment if we finish in time, which would really help pay for daycare (which we are waitlisted for!!!!). I am at 5 months and almost wish it had taken a few months longer to get pg! We have no family nearby either to help out. Lol, and I feel fat! [ Reply | More ]

you can start the transition to cow's milk now if you want. but it took a long time for my kids to decide they liked it. one never did. but don't stress too hard about milk consumption. they don't need that much as long as they're getting hydrated and getting nutrition from foods. [ Reply | More ]

^oh! at 11.5 months i had already started weaning my kids. before the weaning at that age i was nursing 4 times a day. i would start to replace feedings with yogurt snacks - never a bottle or cup - stuff they could eat with a spoon. then i'd still rock or cuddle - just not nurse while i did. i cut out one feeding each week and once i got down to one feeding a day i nursed every other day for a while and maybe every two days until db could go all day and my boobs could go all day w/no nursing. i truly don't think there is a wrong or right way to go about this. just what works for you. i weaned my first dc way too quickly and was in so much pain, that's why i did the gradual thing i wrote above for the next two. i, honestly, didn't measure the yogurt or keep up with how much - i gave it to them until they didn't want more. i'm assuming about 6 oz or so? my kids have always been on target with weight and growth and development so i've never measured or weighed their food. ^if your dd is really struggling, maybe don't rock or do anything they way you would while nursing. read her books or play finger play games. stuff that keeps you engaged but doesn't put her face right on your chest. your post just reminded me that i had to do that with my 2nd. she would lift my shirt up in public for months after she was completely weaned. i agree that if that's how a dc feels they connect with you then it's much harder to get them to wean. you just have to decide if you're ok with continuing to nurse longer than you'd planned (and that's FINE) or if you want to teach her that there are other ways to connect with mommy. you just have to remember that it's YOUR child, YOUR body and YOUR decision. My dc woke once a night for a feed until he stopped bf completely at 12mo. I would say that giving cows milk at 11.5mo should be fine but ped may say different! If you start giving cows milk in a cup you will know how much dc is drinking. I would not give a cup during the night. When I swapped to cows milk my dc started sleeping through on his own. Even with those great numbers which puts my risk equal to a woman 17 years my junior, I have been told by my OB/GYN that amnio is strongly recommended anyway. I was 40, had really good NT results and was told I didn't really need the amnio, but got it anyway. What the doctor told me about making the decision made a lot of sense. If you are going to have the baby no matter what, then no need to do the amnio. If you want to be fully prepared or think that you will terminate if there is a problem, then you should do the amnio. What's NT? Is it the same as alpha fetal protein test? At 39yo, I got a horrible trisomy positive result on the AFP; many women have, yet this is a screening test and not diagnostic so I went ahaead and had the amnio. It was uncomfortable, not painful and reassuring; amnio is a truly diagnostic test and the results were excellent. Had my AFP come back differently(negative for all), I would have refused the amnio, as I've never heard of a false neg on the AFP. Anyone else? Be Well and peaceful and have a wonderful baby. This is the original "postor" writing back. NT is not an AFP test. NT stands for "Nuchal Translucency" screening where they measure the size of the fold behind the baby's neck. The baby's fold was 1.9mm... which is normal. I just had my AFP test (also called a quad screen) yesterday and the results are supposed to be back by early next week. My amnio is scheduled for 6/30/08. I guess I have the option of cancelling the amnio if I get good results from the quad screen. Or... I could go through with it anyway as you did. You said that it was reassuring and not painful, which were nice words to hear. Thanks for your reassurance. I still have to make a decision soon.... So hard to do! [ Reply | More ]

budget? if a lot, i'd get a family something like a museum membership. or maybe a book of the month sent to them or a family magazine (kind of like a present for the family in honor of the baby). if not, a blanket or an outfit is always acceptable. [ Reply | More ]

i'm pg w/my 4th and all i want is stuff to make my life feel less overwhelming. meals, taking my other 3 kids somewhere - that kind of thing. if you want to get a tangible item, i'd think something that might get overlooked with a 4th child. like a keepsake type thing that could be passed down to that child's own children. not that that should be the only reason - but i feel like my younger kids all use hand me down type stuff and so much of it belonged at one time to my oldest. something that always was and will belong to #4 might be nice. A gift certificate to their favorite store is probably best. After three babies, the parents probably don't want to see another toy. They know what they need and can pick something suitable from the store of their choice. [ Reply | More ]

a family premium membership to WCS is always great. It gets two parents, all your kids, + 1 guest into the Bronx, Central, Prospect & Queens Zoos + Aquarium. You never have to pay for special exhibits and you'll receive a limited amt of parking passes + 10% member discount in all shops and food venues. This is such a great value and really terrific for all ages. Don't know what we'd do without ours! [ Reply | More ]
