I am 37 and expecting my 1st child in November. I had a NT test and some ultrasounds and I was told that my risk of having a child with DS is 1/3300... Trisomy 18&13 is 1/6200. Even with those great numbers which puts my risk equal to a woman 17 years my junior, I have been told by my OB/GYN that amnio is strongly recommended anyway. Needless to say, I am very nervous about M/Cing a healthy baby. Can anyone share their experiences with amnio or FISH? I know nothing about FISH... Am I worrying over nothing? I was 40, had really good NT results and was told I didn't really need the amnio, but got it anyway. What the doctor told me about making the decision made a lot of sense. If you are going to have the baby no matter what, then no need to do the amnio. If you want to be fully prepared or think that you will terminate if there is a problem, then you should do the amnio. (btw, I had 2 m/c before ds.) [ Reply | More ]

To clarify... You are 40 and have a DS baby now even though the NT scan came out fine? [ Reply | More ]

I don't see much reason to have an amnio with those numbers. I doubt that I would do it either. [ Reply | More ]

My doc says, "knowing your personality" (I am a worrier), "you are better off knowing that there is a problem than not knowing and continuing to worry about it." [ Reply | More ]

My MIL - who is sort of insane and sort of sage too - says, "The time is passing no matter what you do. What you're worrying about will come no matter what you do. You can spend that time in stress or spend that time living your life" [ Reply | More ]

I had my first at 37 and good nuchal results and my dr. pushed the amnio. i decided not to get it after just having had a miscarriage. drs. have to push it to cover themselves - there was an article in the nyt sunday mag. a couple of years ago about people who sued drs. after their babies were born with problems and they weren't offered testing, so now i think everyone is covering their butts. my dr. must have asked me 10 times if i was getting one, and i'm sure he documented that he asked in my chart. I was 36 & 38 with good numbers. we decided to wait for the level 2 u/s, and if there was anything suspicous, we'd have the amnio that day. [ Reply | More ]

Does the Level 2 u/s tell you about structural abnormalities, chromosomal abnormalities, or BOTH? [ Reply | More ]

What's NT? Is it the same as alpha fetal protein test? At 39yo, I got a horrible trisomy positive result on the AFP; many women have, yet this is a screening test and not diagnostic so I went ahaead and had the amnio. It was uncomfortable, not painful and reassuring; amnio is a truly diagnostic test and the results were excellent. Had my AFP come back differently(negative for all), I would have refused the amnio, as I've never heard of a false neg on the AFP. Anyone else? Be Well and peaceful and have a wonderful baby. This is the original "postor" writing back. NT is not an AFP test. NT stands for "Nuchal Translucency" screening where they measure the size of the fold behind the baby's neck. The baby's fold was 1.9mm... which is normal. I just had my AFP test (also called a quad screen) yesterday and the results are supposed to be back by early next week. My amnio is scheduled for 6/30/08. I guess I have the option of cancelling the amnio if I get good results from the quad screen. Or... I could go through with it anyway as you did. You said that it was reassuring and not painful, which were nice words to hear. Thanks for your reassurance. I still have to make a decision soon.... So hard to do! [ Reply | More ]
