Every year, there are posters who are townhouse owners (bought it for $1MM+) in a bad public school zone and freak out about the school. It's one thing if you can't afford to live in a good gen ed zone but if you can afford it, why do people put themselves in this predicament? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Maybe they bought before they had kids? Maybe they got a really, really great deal on a place they fell in love with. Who knows, not your concern. [ Reply | More ]

If you own an apt on CPW, if you wanted, you could sell it (even if you don't max profit) and move to better zone. [ Reply | More ]

Well, that's not me, but I am in the situation where if dc hadn't qualified for G&T, I would have had to move out of the city b/c we can only afford the particular apartment we rent in Manhattan. It was really scary and dh and I were on edge for 5 months as option after option disappeared (Hunter, SMS, etc.) [ Reply | More ]

I'm just tired of complaints from these people with money. It is their choice whether to choose space or money over the dc's school. Most of us can't have it all. [ Reply | More ]

I'm just tired of people bitching about schools. GET INVOLVED AND IMPROVE THEM. [ Reply | More ]

if the school will let you. Many schools don't let parents get involved other than giving $. Plus, DOE has strict rules the parents & the school admin can't fight. Plus, it takes more than 1 or 2 parents to improve the school. Esp'ly schools with kids who come from really challenging backgrounds. Educating and learning is not only about drills and such - there are emotional needs of kids and physical health that many kids in some schools can't meet. School is only a part of the equation. It's not as simple as you claim. [ Reply | More ]

VOTE. Complain. Get involved in less direct ways, like on the local community board or the PTA. The DOE isn't some monolithic entity that simply exists. It's an agency of the government, and the government is run by We the People. [ Reply | More ]

I know, I know, but you see it takes a GROUP of parents to make a movement. Some schools have PTAs where only 2 people attend. While you wait for the system to change, years go by and your kid pays for it. BTDT and it's not like you can come in and take over the school and change everything. There are more things you can't change than you can. Plus what you want is not nec'ly what other parents want. You are naive if voting, complaining and getting involved in PTA will turn the school around while your dc is there (in the span of 5 yrs). [ Reply | More ]

Then I guess you have to work REALLY hard. Nothing worth having comes easy. You may have to skip a manicure appointment from time to time. [ Reply | More ]

LOL, manicure? Puleeese. I started volunteering for the school while my dc was only a baby, went through DOE training (for parents), tutored kids every week, raised $ and participated in school events, got to know teachers and administration and parents/legal guardians of many students. While what you suggest could work at some schools, many other schools, there are obstacles even the well organized parents can't overcome (assuming there is a group of organized parents which isn't the case). Bull. There is no obstacle you can't overcome. You just aren't working hard enough. [ Reply | More ]

You might as well ignore her. As we discovered 2 days ago, her child is not quite 3 yet. [ Reply | More ]
