It's a tricky age. 4 - 8 months so much happens but they really come into their own when they hit 9 months. Best thing to do is take them out and about with you as much as possible - just watching the world go by keeps them entertained and frees you up. Also, Teletubbies is a great fall-back for that age. My dd will be 3 in November and I let our registration in a downtown preschool lapse because we have no idea what hood we'll be in. I guess I can kiss preschool goodbye. We were in a similar situation. Ended up keeping ds at his downtown preschool and commuting by train (his school and my work are very close). Have you considered other non-preschool programs: art, music, dance, swimming? At 3 years, socializing is so important. Maybe you can find a gym with childcare so your dd can socialize. Hi, we didn't do any commerical tv either. And I will say, it has its pros and cons. DS was a little left out in the superhero department. When the other children on the playground were Spiderman, Superman, etc - my dc was Hercules. It didn't always go over well. So, once he hit K, we did have to give him some common currency. Don't worry. I won't kill dc to watch a cartoon or two so he will fit in a little better. On the movie front, dc has seen both Narnia, all Star Wars. Just likes those. [ Reply | More ]

Pop... I think PG/PG13 movies are inappropriate for kids in Kindergarten. Especially when those movies are rated like that for violence. I mean the Star Wars movies are nothing but bombings, shootings and sword fights. Five year olds are not equipped to process that kind of stuff. np: just curious - what do you think is the point of movie ratings? i seriously do not get why any parent would take their 4 or 5 y.o. to a PG13 movie. what is the rush? it's not like the child can't watch it on dvd 5 yrs later when it's more age appropriate. i don't think the poster sounds snotty at all. if you're going to let a 5 y.o. watch a pg13 movie, are you going to let your 8 y.o. watch a rated R movie? and if not, what's the difference? I watched Star Wars as a kid. And all kinds of other stuff with violence (my dad once took me and my brother to see Rambo - my brother was 4). Specifically Star Wars? Are you that simple-minded? Of course there is no research that says that if you watch Star Wars and Star Wars alone then you will be harmed. He tells us when he has to poop and last night after his bath, he didn't have a diaper on and he kept saying, "Doo doo, Mom!" until I put a diaper on him and then he went, so it seems he knows when he has to go and can hold it unitl he's in the right situation. DS was trained for pooping at 2.5 years, he initiated himself and pretty much never pooped in his diaper since. The peeing took a little longer, I think because his diapers/pull ups were so absorbent it really didn't bother him to be wet; it wasn't until we decided to bite the bullet and have him wear underwear fulltime -- and deal with the inevitable accidents -- at about 2 years 9 months that he finally learned to control his peeing. Still, all in all, pretty early for a boy and relatively painless, we feel VERY lucky. [ Reply | More ]

I'm assuming because he is always meeting up with us for breakfast with some new woman that I know I will never see with him again. He really is too good looking for his own good. [ Reply | More ]

He's 31 and currently living in Boston, but does a ton of business in NY. He also has a home outside LA. He's pretty immature, imho, but I'm his big sister. He has a very big heart and needs to find the right girl, blah, blah, blah. However, he gets death and grief in a real way. [ Reply | More ]

I live in New York. The distance doesn't bother me since I am looking for sex and not a relationship. Well of course I'd like to have dinner, etc. with teh guy too, but nothing dating wise. He sounds like a great guy. How does he get death and grief? [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn't do the bar scene. too skeevy, unless it's a sports bar, but don't do that unless you're really into sports. what about a bookstore near campus or a starbucks or cafe [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] anyone else read the article about the "middle class" in businessweek. i am seriously offended. i consider myself middle class and am seriously annoyed at hearing people making 200k or 300k complaining about how they are so squeezed. (and no offense intended to the poster below who can't afford a country home). 12 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I hear you but it depends on where you live. It also seems that the more you have, the more you need. We should all try to be happy with what we have [ Reply | More ]

i think this is true. and i don't really have a problem with the idea of people spending as much as their income. why knock yourself earning it if you don't want to the benefits it brings. but at least acknowledge that you are living it up and don't complain about feeling stretched. but people can feel stretched and still be "wealthy" by my standards. It's all about expectations. If you have a large income and buy a big house, you will have more expenses related to that house than I do with my tiny modest little place. I don't have to keep up with any Joneses because my nabe is kind of crappy. Therefore, no pool, no lawn boy (darn it) no decorator etc etc. [ Reply | More ]

i guess what bothered me was this whole "i'm a struggling middle class person" idea they have. i don't think earning that money qualifies as a middle class income and i don't care that you live in an expensive city. I understand that they can be stretched and so yeah, they'll feel it. But when you're living this really nice lifestyle, don't do the "poor middle class me i can't pay any more taxes" thing. well don't get me started on the whole tax thing. I think we all pay far too much of what we earn to teh gov't which wastes a ton of it. [ Reply | More ]

DW and I have a constant battle over misuse of the word "need." You don't "need" more because you have more. You want more. You feel entitled to more. You crave more. But needs are pretty basic and pretty constant. [ Reply | More ]

ITA, the poster below was lamenting her "middle class" status on 200k./yr. Crazy! Having lived in NYC I know that while there are lots of expensive temptations the essentials are about the same as any other major metropolitan area. $200k. is plenty. You dont even qualify for a Roth IRA or the 2008 Tax Rebate. [ Reply | More ]
